gamecube revisited
I remember enjoying the first game, but not caring much for the other two.
I also remember the first game being REALLY hard...and also tough to get used too, as this was still one of my first forays into 3D gaming. I remember not liking the radar function...and thinking the bosses where WAY too hard. and didn't have too many predictable patterns. 15 years or so later? it's remarkable how good the first game holds up. the combat is smooth. the programing and camera work is good. the sprites are good, if a bit lo poly. the combat is fun, so you don't miss the one kill two button attack. the moves look like real ninja moves. The bosses got remarkably easier this time around, after not having played it in 15 years. especially the mystic ninjas, which I remember haunted my dreams the first time around. the only thing that is really annoying about this game is the layout. the selection of levels and how it continues after you die makes constant replay a chore. and all the repeated voice work of the characters gets annoying to listen too after the first minute with a phrase being repeated every single hit. but it's nice to have the cast in there, minus Hun. It'll be interesting to see how the other two games hold up, but i'm having fun revisiting this one. good thing i still have all the original discs.

This is cool, better if you could post pictures but yeah make a progress log of the interesting thing of those 2k3 Konami games, there were 3 right? If you can get to the spin offs like Mutant Melee even better.

Gamecube was great, I wish I bought more games for it than I did, I never made the most of it.

See, I actually strongly dislike the first game, which was repetitive and dull. I enjoyed the second game, in which you could unlock additional playable characters, significantly more. I don't remember the third one as much, but recall that even in s ingle player the other 3 turtles were controlled by AI and fought alongside you.

I never finished the console version of TMNT2:Battle Nexus, but I got a surprising amount of enjoyment out of TMNT3: Mutant Nightmare for the PS2.
I was afraid I wouldn't like the level-up system of that game because it might make the gameplay too convoluted and overuse that "Mystic Turtle" designs or whatever they were called. But I did come to find the game quite enjoyable over time (got frustrating to try and play it for long single sittings, but worked nicely in small installments over a month or so). I liked even being able to use some alternate characters like April and Casey as Turtle substitutes during some of the shooting missions. The first level could be offputting to many due to its frustrations as an "escort mission" trying to keep April from getting blown up. My advice is to avoid getting April stuck between enemies. I'd keep one turtle hanging back on the outskirts of the fighting and direct the other 3 to rush into the fray and clear out a pathway. Don't bother exploring the whole compound because April WILL find her way into trouble and walk into a punch or explosion. Just locate the exit and move towards it cautiously (Triceratons tend to swarm out of the walls when you're not expecting it!)

the problem with battle nexus was the graphics.
the characters where SO far damn away from the camera, that it made them tough to see and the action tough to follow. even if the graphics where essentially the same from the first game. they also changed up the combat moves. where the moves where perfectly choreograpphed in game 1, in game 2, it seems REALLY sloppy. So far, I've all but completed game one again ( I can't for the life of me beat baxter bot). and started game two. I got passed shredders skyscraper. But can't get past the stupid ice planet bridge. the monsters are WAY too tough and those little dino's take WAY too many hits to kill.

I've yet to play the first game of the second TMNT Konami trilogy, I beat Battle Nexus which wasn't bad(ps2). I would like to pick up the first and Mutant Nightmare at some point. Only one I have on GC is Mutant Melee which isn't a bad game!

since there does not seem to be any long plays of these games, currently trying to record a lag free version. which is tough because capturewiz can be memory intensive and i have no hdmi option for older games.

I think the first game was pretty good and I enjoy it a hell of a lot more than the awful sequel which I just found unplayable. Why fix what isn't broken? Having your characters jumping all the time was just wrong because they weren't originally designed to do that. Does anyone know if Mutant Nightmare was an improvement over the second game and closer to the first?

I couldn't find Mutant Nightmare on Gamecube back in the day, so I only have the first two on GC and the third on Xbox. Mutant Nightmare was a huge improvement over Battle Nexus; BN was easily the worst of the three. I've heard that some copies have a bug that won't let you defeat Hun (he never stops flashing red and being invincible), which apparently I'm "lucky" enough to have, so I've only completed the first and third games. But I had a lot of fun with the first one and Mutant Nightmare; Battle Nexus, not so much. That game was clearly rushed and most likely not finished.
A beat-'em-up where you can simply race through the levels avoiding all the enemies is not a very good beat-'em-up. The first game was kind of repetitive and there wasn't a whole lot to it, but at least it was overall a decent game. I dug it. Second one was just weak. I only have fond and vivid memories of the first game because my Xbox died shortly after beating Mutant Nightmare, so I only played it once, but I liked it. A case could be made for it being the best of the three, but I'd need to play it again before I could agree with that. I've beaten the first one about a dozen times and try to go back to it every couple years or so.

Could you elaborate on what makes the third game better than the second one? Please tell me they got rid of the platform jumping, it broke the second game. Last edited by pferreira; 02-08-2019 at 12:29 PM. |

I honestly can't remember that far back; I only played through it once, ten-plus years ago. It was just overall better. My memories of the second game are bad, my memories of the third game are better. But it's vague.
Sorry I'm not more help, if and when I play them again I'll go into greater detail.

Mutant Nightmare basically takes the best of the first and second game and rolls it into one. There is little to no platforming, the combat is way better, but I didn't find the levels as interesting as in past games. It's still a good game though and the unlockables are pretty neat (video bios, costumes, Turtles in Time arcade).

In the UK I never managed to get a copy of Mutant Nightmare for the PC because it was never released. PAL also never got a release of the game for GC (probably because of console sales in PAL territories) that's why I imported some years ago. Yahoo!!! Honestly I found the first game incredibly playable and got quite good at it, the second I just couldn't play at all. What I do find interesting and I'm not sure if this is chronicled anywhere is the fact the 4Kids games had exclusive FMV, some taken from the cartoon but most was new. It's weird because I played the first game before seeing the 2003 series and was shocked that the story and also footage played out differently. In a way the the first game at least is like an alternate version of Season 1 of the series. On a side note as I used to buy TMNT games for PC when I did buy the 2007 game (this time made by Ubisoft) I had real trouble controlling the characters using the keyboard. Never used a joypad to play PC games back then which is what most people would have done back then. Anyway I don't think Ubisoft really thought it through because they assigned two button keys with the same signal which cancelled out one command. This meant that running and jumping was impossible and you'd fall to your death every time. What you had to do was go into the game folder and manually edit the keyboard section of 'Config' to assign the keys differently. After doing that it was possible to finally play the game properly but really hacking the controls is not something the player should have been required to do.
