Your personal ultimate roster for a TMNT fighting game
If the developers of Smash Up knew what they were doing, they would have given the fans a game celebrating the 25th anniversary and incorporating all of the TMNT universes. My question is: If you could design your own TMNT roster, which characters (and versions) would you choose?
Guidelines: 20 characters. Specify which version of the character you would use as their "primary" form. The rest of the versions can be unlocked without requiring another character. For example, "OT Leonardo" would be your primary character, and 2k3, movie, Mirage, etc. would all be unlockable skins for that character. You can choose how many of the 20 characters are unlockable and how many you start with. My Roster (characters in red are unlockable) 2k3 Leonardo OT Donatello 1990 movie Raph Mirage Mike Movie Shredder 2k3 Splinter Movie Casey Jones OT Bebop OT Rocksteady 2k3 Karai NT:TNM Venus OT Rat King OT Leatherhead OT Slash OT Baxter Stockman (Fly) 2k3 Bishop Movie Tatsu 2k3 Hun 2k3 Usagi OT Krang |

OT Leonardo
Mirage Raph 2K3 Don (Would definitely have to have a cyborg alt. costume from Vol. 3) TMNT Mikey OT April Vol. 3 Casey Jones (American Flag Mask) Mirage Shredder OT Bebop OT Rocksteady OT Krang Dark Horse Usagi Yojimbo TMNT Splinter Mirage Nobody Mirage Savanti Romero Ultimate Ninja 2K3 Karai OT Foot Soldier Tokka Rahzar Null (Demon Form) I gotta mention The Mighty Mutanimals & Choate as they aren't featured (but they would've been with more characters!). If this were a Smash Bros. Brawl type of game with 30-35 characters, they'd definitely make the cut.

I was thinking of it being a Smash Bros type of game just with fewer characters lol. I think if we extend it to 30 - 35 everybody would use the same ones.

No specific "version" as default. It would be either some mixture of previous versions, or a completely new design altogether. Red are unlockable.
Leonardo Michelangelo Raphael Donatello Splinter Casey April Leatherhead Radical Jagwar Shredder Krang Karai Foot Ninja Bebop Rocksteady Hun Bishop Mozar Complete Carnage

Ha, thanks! I tried to make it very well rounded while giving love to some of my favorites who happen to be under appreciated at the same time.

I guess the biggest thing would be how hard would it be to do multiple "costumes" so you can have the Turtles and have various unlock able versions as well.
I mean we could have Mirage, OT, Movie, 2k3, Next Mutation and maybe others. Heck, I think it'd be funny if one of April's alternate skins was Venus, you know, so she's not a whole new character, and would share a move set with April

Thought I'd give it a try. Roster consist of 35 playable characters and three generics for survival and last the time limit.
tried to include a little of all, but i think I fel a bit short on the diversity. The characters would have different costume/skin as well as appropriate color schemes for team vs team. The costume swaps would have different effects on their attacks and visual effects might differ as well. Start up Roster Good Guys Leonardo (Mirage color, B/w and Toon) Michelangelo (Mirage color, B/w and Toon) Donatello (Mirage color, B/w and Toon) Raphael (Mirage color, B/w and Toon) Casey Jones (Btts, Toon and toon color change with Vol3 mask) April O'Neil (yellow and blue jumpuit. Similar to 2k3) Leatherhead (Mirage and Toon) Villains Bebop ( Original design and Toon ) Rocksteady ( Original design and Toon ) Rat King ( Original design and Toon ) Human Baxter Stockman ( Mirage and Toon ) Karai ( Mirage and Lotus Toon costume ) Slash (Original and Turtles in Time) Unlock-able Roster Good Guys Venus De Milo (Original and next Mutation) Splinter (Toon, Mirage and Live Action Movie) Hamato Yoshi (Original and 2K3) Quarry (Original and 2K3) Mondo Gecko (Original and Toon) Wingnut and Screwloose (Original and Archie) Metalhead ( Toon and original) Fugitoid ( Mirage and Toy design) Utrom with android body ( robot exposed and human-like costume) Ninjara (original and Archie) Villains Tatsu (movie and original) Shredder (Mirage, Mirage B/W, Toon and Super Shredder) Oroku saki (Martial arts gear and Business suit) Tokka (Movie and Original) Razhar (Movie and Original) Krang with android body General Traag ( Toon and original) Fly Baxter Stockman ( Toon and original) Hun (Mirage and 2K3) Savanti Romero (Mirage and Orignal) Antrax ( Toon and original) Chrome Dome ( Toon and original) Survival mode - Time Limit Foot Ninja (Mirage, Mirage B/W and Toon) Utroms (Smash-up and Original) Triceratons (Mirage and Toon) |

Man, it's sort of sad to imagine how awesome a fan service such a game would make... only to realize we'll never get this unless it's in the form of a fan-game. Maybe one day, somebody will pull off an awesome Smash-Up hack.

I like how everyone throws in at least one semi-obscure character. That's actually a tradition in TMNT fighting games.

My roster is pretty basic, nobody really obscure. It's because I haven't seen every episode of any series and have read few of the comics so I don't know any really obscure characters.

Venus kind of counts. There's lots of people who had no idea a fifth, female turtle existed.

NES: Hothead SNES: War, Wingnut(possibly the Archie incarnation), and Aska (original character) Genny: Sisyphus (OC), Ray Fillet, April (as a fighter for the first time) Mutant Melee: Sleeg, "Monster", Traximus (though most are probably acquainted with Triceratons in general) Smash Up: Utrominator Yep, it's a trend, indeed.

TMNT 1990/Mirage mash up Designs for the TMNT's "regular" skins as I think limiting the TMNT's look to one uinverse hurts more than helps *cough* smash up *cough*
Anyway I'm thinking 20 to start and 33 with the unlockable characters Each "base" character either has their Mirage design or has mixed look ie elements from each universe unless otherwise noted. * signify unlockable skins The good Raph (alternate Mirage and 1990 movie skin*) Leo(alternate Mirage and TNM skin*) Mikey (alternate Mirage and OT skin*) Donnie (alternate Mirage and 2k3 skin*) Splinter(alternate first appearance skin and purple OT kimono*) Radical (alternate black costume*) 2k3 April ( alternate OT yellow jumpsuit and 07' movie costume*) 2k3 Casey Jones (alternate Mirage and 1990 movie costume*) Fugitoid (alternate Volume four giant robot mode*) The bad Shredder (altenate 2k3 and OT skins*) Karai (alternate 2k3 outfit and SNES Tournament Fighters costume*) Tatsu (alternate Khan outfit*) Foot Ninja (alternate 1990 Movie and OT costume*) 2k3 Hun (alternate Mutant form*) 2k3 season 1 Cyborg Robo Baxter (alternate Robot Body from BTTS*) 2k3 Bishop(alternate BTTS outfit*) OT Krang ( alternate Super Krang getup*) OT Bebop(alternate Private Porknose outfit*) OT Rocksteady (alternate Pirate Outfit from Turtles in time*) Savanti Romero (alternate 2k3 look*) The Unlockable (each character is unlocked when completed with a certain base character or combinations of base characters. They are seperated into 3 tiers, depending on how easy it is to unlock them) tier 1 Nobody (alternate Cop outfit)-complete game with Casey Jones Tokka -complete game with Bebop Rahzar-complete game with Rocksteady Armaggon-complete game with Krang Complete Carnage--complete game with Radical Rat King (alternate OT outfit) -complete game with Bishop Baxter the Fly (alternate human form)-complete game with 2K3 Baxter tier 2 2k3 Miyamoto Usagi (alternate OT outfit)-complete game with Splinter and Fugitoid Shoate(alternate black and Red Kimono)-complete game with Hun and Karai TNM Dragon Lord (alternate action figure outfit)-complete game with Savanti and Foot ninja tier 3 2k3 Hamato Yoshi (alternate Bruce Lee outfit)-complete game with All TMNT Super Shredder (alternate Black outfit)-complete game with all members of the Foot clan, not including the OT characters Manga Turtle Saint- complete game with all base characters phew. That took a long time... longer than I thought it would

To elaborate a bit (though you are definitely on the right track): Hothead had his own figure, of course, but it was quite a bit different. Most people only knew him from his toy, and even then, he wasn't exactly a household name. War definitely counts, as the Adventures comics were not exactly well-known at the time (almost nobody I knew as a kid had read them). Same with Armaggon, and perhaps technically, Adventures Wingnut, though I had never thought of him like that. Aska being exclusive to this game definitely makes her obscure as hell, even though she's fondly remembered by those who have played the game. Honestly, I'd put Karai in this category, because at the time, I didn't know who she was, none of my friends did, and hell, you can go back and read some old FAQs/fansites that also had no idea. Ray Fillet wasn't really as much of a wtf character as most because he was a popular figure, but this one is essentially Man Ray so I'll give you that. Sisyphus, like Aska, is a random, out-there exclusive character. Blaze cosplay April is definitely weird as hell but since she's an essential character that everyone knows, it's not as much as the others. Again, I'd put Karai here for being relatively unknown for this time period. Traximus does indeed possibly count as does Mozar, but they were both quite prominent in the series as well as had their own semi-popular action figures. Sleeg was such a random choice that I completely forgot who he was until I saw the episode he debuted in a second time. Monster takes the cake for being probably the most obscure character in a popular fighting game, ever. Gold Shredder might count since he never showed up with that armor in anything else. Utroms themselves are basically unknown to anybody who didn't watch 2K3 or read the Mirage comics, but even most hardcore fans of the 4Kids cartoon didn't have any idea what an Utrominator was, since it only showed up in the background of exposition scenes in one (albeit popular) episode.

Some really good responses guys! If a game like this were to be made, I would want a bigger roster than 20 characters; too many good ideas!

Heh, EPIC win, dude!
Also, I completely forgot about Armaggon in SNES Tournament Fighters. He really would have been a surprise to most people. Also, the Genesis game was my first introduction to Karai. I was totally expecting Shredder as the final boss so a female Foot Clan leader was a big shock for me. Karai seems so familiar nowadays, it's hard to remember it wasn't always the case!

Ok, let's see if I can narrow it down to 20. Character version is as either as designed by Ken Mitchroney or a solid anime version (like the promo art for Tournament Fighters SNES)
1-4 are obvious. 5 Ray Fillet 6 Jagwar 7 Dreadmon 8 Wingnut and Screwloose 9 Mondo Gecko 10 Leatherhead (with his Stump Intergalactic Wrestling suit as an alt) 11 Ninjara 12 Karai 13 Casey Jones (resembling himself in the first movie) 14 Miyamoto Usagi 15 Slash 16 Bellybomb 17 Krang-headed Shredder 18 Armaggon 19 Cryin' Houn' 20 Golani Final boss: Maligna Unlockable Uber-boss: Cudley the Cowlick My preferences are... decidedly obvious. |

Have barely read any of the comics, but from television shows and movies I have seen of the ninja turtles, my list would be something like this.....
(the ones you start off with) 1. Leonardo (2K3 version) 2. Rapheal (movie version) 3. Donetello (original toon version) 4. Micheleangelo (Mirage. Not too familar with the mirage comics, but from what I can gather, Mikey seems best here) 5. Master Splinter (2K3) 6. April O'Neil (2007 film) 7. Casey Jones (Movie) (the ones you'll unlock) 8. Shredder (Movie) 9. The Rat King (2K3) 10. Leatherhead (2K3) 11. Krang (Original Toon) 12. Bebop (Original Toon) 13. Rocksteady (Original Toon) 14. Foot Soldier (2K3) 15. Rock Soldier (Original Toon) 16. Purple Dragon Gang Member (Mirage. Again, don't know too much into it, but I think it would be fitting to have one of the first enemies that the ninja turtles kicked major shell on) 17. Karai (2K3) 18. Mona Lisa (Original toon) 19. Venus (the NEXT mutation) 20. Kirby (the 4th never-shot live-action film) |
