They're tripling down on this, I got called alt-right racist/sexist yesterday because on a thread I questioned how people still go to these lengths to say the movie was good. I was also told I lived in an echo chamber and that the movie is great because it was a critical and commercial success.

I was all about Rey after the first flick. I saw a ton of potential, and she's a good actress.

Then it's all "Nah, she's just Way More Awesome Than Everyone, Ever, Just Because We Say So". I called BS and walked away.

People declare Luke a... "whatever" in spite of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Such as, "He made a lot of mistakes and wasn't good at listening to anyone." He had to earn his status, to at least SOME degree, even if some of it was offscreen in-between films. He struggled a lot. And whatever "magical" talents he had could at least be attributable to bloodline. Him getting the ever-loving piss kicked out of him by Vader at the end of "Empire" kind of shatters those "But Luke was OP toooooo!" arguments.

Luke was good, and getting better. But he was NOT "Captain Way More Bad-Ass And Awesome Than Darth Vader and The Emperor and Starman and Captain Crunch COMBINED", the way he's accused by some of being, or the way Rey actually IS.

Rey needs to be Someone Important's Kid or the story is broken. It's really that simple. No character in the history of the Star Wars films ever came out of the box a 100% Certified Bad-Asss. That's because it's lousy f*cking writing. There needs to be a How and Why.

I understand why they made Rey the way they did though: they wanted female lead to pander to lefties and avoid their screeching about "wrong portrayal of female character", so they chose to make character with no emotions and no flaws, which had rendered her boring and sterile.

Please. Rey would have sent back all the bolts from that force training remote AND Desotryed it in the process. It took Luke 3 years to even start to learn how to move objects with his mind, ala light saber.

Rey did it in barely 24 hours. Luke is no mary sue.

A guy makes ONE lucky shot in the Death Star trenches, despite being mediocre-to-lousy at everything he does for the previous two hours, and suddenly he's a Mary Sue.

Like you said, that training orb or whatever was sure kicking his ass pretty good for a while, there.

Luke was quite far from perfect, all the way through. Didn't do everything right. Hard to like sometimes. His whole arc is a struggle for balance; not just with The Force, but within himself.

We can't say things that aren't true about one character, just because we want to like a new character more. Ain't right, ain't fair.
