OAV Canonocity?

I know the OAV (Super Turtles Anime) was considered its own series or whatever, but it's basically the exact same thing as the regular OT. Aside from the slight visual differences due to a different animation studio, and Shredders armor, it's spot on. Same lair, same city, same personalities, etc. So with that being said, do you consider these episodes to be unofficially canon? That the events of these two eps took place at some point during the 10 seasons we had back in the day?
Also, was it intended to be canon at all?

Bee Media... But, what studio animated the OT? Was Fred Wolf Films actually an animation studio?

It's like if Archie's TMNT Adventures had gotten an animated, faithful adaptation... Archie's continuity was a splinter timeline of the OT as they had the same opening stories, but veered in different directions. So, the OT's Eye Of Sarnath epic and Archie's storyline about Sarnath coming to Earth to reclaim his eye couldn't have existed in the same universe. Same thing with the TMNT mangas (Japanese comics)... There were a number of OT eps adapted before the Super Turtles adventures. So, likely, if we cobbled together a playlist of the OT eps adapted in the mangas followed by the OVA, we could consider that another branch for the OT multiverse. ^_^

I'm a Transformers fan and contributor at TFWiki.net, so I tend to see things from the TFWiki point of view: "everything is canon, but not everything is in the same continuity."

The Super Turtles OVAs are canon with the Japanese version of the Old Toon, which only ran for 101 episodes.

So I just see the US and Japanese versions of the show splintering off after 101 episodes into two separate continuities. The US goes in the direction of the rest of the series as we know it, into Red Sky and all that, while Japan went with the Super Turtle OVAs.

I've always rationalized it as such and been content.

This is the best theory. It's just like how the Archie-Verse splintered from the OT after issue #4. It seems the multi-verse is splintering all the time!

See Demon-Alucards's excellent chart:
