Is there a movie out there that doesn't have politics in it?
Because, I'm trying to think of one, and drawing a blank.

you wouldn't like it it has strong female characters and that might make you uneasy.

Nothing is wrong with a movie with politics in of itself (Ever After High has a Caste System)

It’s just really stupid when you have that vocal minority screaming ____ist when you don’t want to see a movie just because it coincidently has such themes

Which is ironic as the main villain killmonger is literally the extremist type.

We humans are political creatures.

Why on earth would we write politics into movies? Or any art? Art never imitates life.

See, I disagree. Art most certainly imitates life, because without life Art has no context and no meaning.

Artists don't create in a vacuum. They, and subsequently their work, are the product of their time.

Sure you can add MORE politics to a thing, but I don't believe there's a such thing as a non-political work.

It's been my experience that people often confuse something that aligns itself with their beliefs as apolitical because it doesn't exist separate from their experiences.

I agree, the word “politics” could easily replace the word “beauty” in the phrase “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” And sometimes art can align very well with political issues. Even if the creator of the art did not have that intent. Or the creator of the art could have inspiration from political issues and want to deliver a message.

You missed my sarcasm; we agree completely on that. As you said, things that agree with us don't register as easily as things that don't agree with us.

Black Panther represents the most successful popular culture phenomenon in our generation (read, the Marvel Cinematic Universe) giving center stage to someone who isn't a white man (and isn't a white man's ethnic sidekick). Not even to someone singular, but to an entire cast and story. I think that's something to be celebrated. For some reason, some people don't.

Bold for emphasis.

There have been black superhero films (Blade trilogy) and black casts (as you say, Coming to America). But Black Panther is different in that it is the latest entry in the successful billion-dollar MCU. Ask 10 people on the streets if they've seen the Marvel movies, you can probably get 8 or 9 yes's in reply.

And "Coming to America" was like 30 years ago now. That there hasn't been anything like it in 30 years is more troubling than it is an example of "See? There are other movies like Black Panther!"

Sidenote: I really, really want a "Coming to America" 2. I'd bet the farm it happens, too, especially now.

‘Black Panther’ passes ‘Titanic’ in box office record, becomes third highest-grossing of all time

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertain...icle-1.3922405

“Black Panther” has sunk “Titanic.”

The Marvel superhero has now surpassed $665 million at the domestic box office, putting it ahead of James Cameron’s 1997 flick and its $659.4 million gross income (without accounting for inflation).

That total makes the Ryan Coogler-directed movie the third highest-grossing picture of all time, behind just “The Force Awakens” ($760 million) and “Avatar” ($937 million).

The wild success of “Black Panther,” starring Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o and Angela Bassett, had Marvel Studios co-President Kevin Feige talking about a sequel before the movie even hit theaters.

“Titanic” previously held the No. 3 spot on the best-grossing movies list.

“We always say we work on one movie at a time. If you have any good ideas, put it in the movie you’re making. If you don’t, you might not be able to make another one,” he told Variety in February.

“That said, Panther has been around for more than half a century in the comic books and there are many, many stories to tell.”

By the end of March, “Black Panther” had passed “The Avengers” to become the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time.

Damn this movie is still going strong. At this point I'm starting to doubt Infinity War topping it, which is something that would have sounded insane 6 months ago. I wonder if they considered pushing back the home video release so that it would sell more tickets. (Heard a rumor that's what happened with The Greatest Showman.)

EDIT: just kidding, IW was a behemoth and broke every record. What was I thinking?

First 33 minutes of Black Panther are pretty Captivating. Especially thought the gravel tracking system was a pretty cool idea.

I also like the fact that the lead warrior guard is all business, but has a slight goofiness to her side as well. makes for an interesting character.
