Well apparantly the fungus expert, Lt. Stamets, is gay... Wonder how many aliens he'll have fun with?

* Title of the show, Star Trek: Discovery: It's OK, I guess. Hard to mess up a title, though.
* Design of the titular ship, the USS Discovery: It's ass.
* The promise of it being set outside the Abramsverse: Win.
* Promise of edgy stories, a sweeping season long story: Possibly good. It worked for Enterprise Season 3 and the Dominion War in DS9. As long as it's something interesting (unfortunately, nothing so far strikes me as remotely interesting, certainly not anything to justify making the show another damn prequel).
* Bryan Fuller made showrunner, then leaving: Very troubling.
* The setting, 10 years before TOS: Terrible idea. Ass-backwards.
* Delaying the show 6 months: Bad. And concerning.
* The promise of creating and putting a gay character for the show for the sake of creating and putting a gay character for the show: Meaningless to me.
* One of the crew is a fungus expert: What?
* Announcement of Michelle Yeoh as the captain of the... Shenzhou? Meaningless to me. And probably mostly to the show. It's Star Trek: Discovery, not Star Trek: Shenzhou.

That's kind of where I'm at.

that's his title? Fungus expert? Seriously?

Sigh.

this is where we get into agenda territory folks. Don't announce it like it's this big changing thing when we are in 2016. just let folks discover it on their own.

sigh.

I think we're pretty much on the same page. I mean, it's about time Trek had a gay main character, but is that all the thought they've put into it?

"We've got a guy... and HE'S GAY!!!!!"
"We need more detail."
...
...
...
"Comic relief! He likes space mushrooms!"
"GOLD."

Not in my eyes. I feel like a lot of modern TV shows LOVE to sacrifice meaningful, "full" episodes in the name of one long story arc.
As in, rather than 13 interesting stories per season, you get one lonnnng drawn-out narrative whose actually gripping plot points are few and far between in those 13 eps. The season-long story will just be a gimmick to trick people into thinking that there's a reason to keep watching this show after seeing that episode 1 sucks.

Entertainment Weekly makes a big thing about the fact that a character on a show is going to have same sex attraction, and suddenly it's agenda!

Yeah, it's agenda.
Entertainment weekly wants the links and the advertising revenue.
Well played EW. Well played.

And he was named after the top fungus expert, Paul Stamets. He's written several books on growing fungi in space. I've found several articles written in the past decade about astromycology. Kinda fascinating.

I'm sorry, but it's coming off as "goofy comedy wacky" crap to me.

It can't be as bad as season 1 of Enterprise.

I have seen parts of seasons 3 and 4 that I liked, but I am currently watching it in order after various episodes of seasons 3-6 of TNG. Quite a contrast after stuff like Best of Both Worlds, Brothers, and Yesterday's Enterprise.

Season 1 feels like a chore so far, but I am aware that it gets better.

And now for...Klingons! Seems thar be Klingons in the new Star Trek series. Buuuut will they have bumpy heads or smooth heads??

Chris Obi will star as "T'Kuvma," the Klingon leader seeking to unite the Klingon houses.

Shazad Latif (Dr. Jekyl in Penny Dreadful) will star as "Kol," the Commanding Officer of the Klingons and protegé of T'Kuvma.

Mary Chieffo will star as "L'Rell," the Battle Deck Commander of the Klingon ship.

Klingons and Vulcans have had PLENTY of screentime across all of Star Trek.

Wake me up when we do something with less-popular species.

Remember how Enterprise had episodes focusing on the Andorians and Tellarites? Even an Orion episode?

Remember how they came up with the Suliban and the Xindi?

But nah, the Klingons are good. Yay merchandise.

Well, not some sinister agenda... but when Fuller pretty much told us from the beginning that was part of his plan when pre-production began before a single script had been commissioned and they even knew what form or shape the same sex attraction character would take or even who the crew would be, it literally can't not be an agenda.

It's TPTB going, "Uh oh! No Kirk and Spock, not even the Enterprise?!?! How will this sell? We better at least have the Klingons!"

Star Trek is dead. I don't read any of the comics or books so I have no idea what goes on in them, but in terms of TV shows and movies I think we're done.

Exactly. How hard was it to pitch a 25th century show? FFS. Star Trek hasn't boldly gone where no viewer had gone before since Voyager went off the air... though I did like most of Enterprise.

I certainly hope those movies are dead. And I'd rather have no Trek TV than bad Trek TV.

Deep Space Nine was still the fvcking BEST.
