I'm listening to Marilyn Manson's latest album, "The Pale Emperor" on a whim and holy crapsicles - it sounds like he's got his groove back, dropped the outdated teen angst and is just serving up solid rock'n'roll once more! This is the best album he's done since "Holy Wood" - Manson, I completely forgive you for the atrocity that was "Eat Me Drink Me" and the dreck that was "Born Villain"!

Boy, do I hate THAT guy!
Sorry. I try not to be like that. But he's one of those where just the mention of his name hits my gag reflex somethin' fierce. Plus the wife likes him, and for the first 3 years I knew her that's all I ever heard when we were together.

Awww, c'mon, his early albums were great! Admittedly one has to execute the aging goth look carefully or risk looking totally absurd (for example, I'd much prefer to remember Dani Filth as he was 10 years ago - both musically and physically ) but really, you could say that about a lot of aging rock-stars. It's a rough lifestyle, man.

Eh, they were "okay".
I'm changing as I get older. I still like everything I ever did, but one thing I've gotten VERY far away from, is a lot of the "darker" or "angrier" music. I still listen to it, but not as much, and it honestly doesn't speak to me the same way as it did in my angry youth. I'm very much over it. Much as I may have tried to deny it at the time, it DID contribute a great deal to me STAYING angry and depressed for so long and not actually getting my head together. It may have, to a point, "given a voice to my pain" and given me some comfort, but there wasn't anything uplifting or positive about it, either. And I'm at a point in life where I am just fed up with overwhelming darkness and negativity. My wife hates that, by the way. All she would ever listen to forever is King Diamond and Manson, if she had her way. Meanwhile, she's the most negative person I've ever met, always listening to angry, bleak music with tons of screaming, and her immediate response to anything positive or uplifting in music is that it's "boring garbage". Unless it's Disney. I'unno, she's nuts. But she gives me no end of sh*t for abandoning that dark and angry stuff. I think she's got a warped perspective, personally. I mean, to me, it's no surprise that a person who's constantly having someone screaming at them into their headphones, ranting about violent and depressing stuff, would be somewhat angry and depressed in their Real Life. ((Shrug)) Anyways, Manson never really appealed to me even as a kid. I was already very savvy to people putting on acts. All the kids were all into him b/c he was "twisted"; I'm like, "Oh, he's doing Ozzy and Alice, on twice the heroin. Neat, I guess." Too much of a pose, I couldn't take his music seriously given how desperate for attention he was/is. I'unno. I can listen to it if it's on, but I'd never willingly put it on. There's a few songs I like, same as anything.

I think music definitely affects mood; for me, listening to angry music actually calms me down - I'm not always good at expressing my emotions so the best way for me to wind down after an aggravating day is to crank up something loud and half an hour later, I'm much mellower.
Interestingly enough, they did a study over here in Oz showing that while people who are depressed and angry seek out heavier music, listening to it does relax them so it's definitely an interesting talking point - how much of what we like is based on our personalities and how much of our personality is influenced by what we like?. Link to the study is here, btw: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-06-2...ession/6571820 Bottom line though, I subscribe to the school of thought that anything I listen to is cool because I am cool.

That's pretty much my angle, too.
