Three Things I learned from last night's Discovery:
  • Holodecks existed pre-Kirk and co. though possibly only for training simulation.
  • Vulcan Mind Melds and Katra sharing have healing effects and even allow you to communicate through the vastness of space.
  • Michal Burnham is the greatest human...nay....BEING in Star Trek. EVER!
Why am I bothering with this anymore?

Because Saru is awesome?

I dunno, I haven't gotten back to watching since Episode 3... I'll get back to it eventually, but I've got Stranger Things and Punisher to look forward to right now.

Nah, I thin it's the Star Trek in the name...gotta at least give it a shot, even when it confounds me.

Yeah...the being stuck for 6 months near scraps of Star Fleet Vessels, one with a functional warp component that wasn't salvaged or destroyed in that time by the Federation and thus having to
Spoiler:
eat Captain Georgiou, not just as some sign of strength but also as a true means of survival
was ridiculous. So ridiculous that the spoiled bits are the most understandable part of it.

EDIT: And yes, Cylons, Saru is probably my favorite thing about this show.

Saru and Lorca. I was really liking Lorca, but I've only seen him in one episode. Like I said, I've been okay with the series, but it hasn't compelled me to keep up on it very regularly.

At least Lorca's another character with some development...can't say much for any character that isn't Michael.

Though I do kinda like Tilly as well.

Captain Georgiou was great. Then she died.

I'm not a fan of Tilly. Oh, I liked Stamets.

Michael is... well, she grew on me in Episode 3. I'm holding out hope for her character.

I have moments where I don't dislike Michael, but man episode 6 made it hard.

How were 4 and 5?

Also, Pocket Books released a book written in sync with the showrunners and writers, that does a REALLY good job of digging into Michael's relationship with Sarek and Spock. I read it and it really went a long way towards mollifying my irritation at "shoehorning" in Spock and Sarek.

5 was the least Michael-centric, focusing more on Lorca and introducing Rain Wilson's Harry Mudd. It was probably my favorite so far. I've forgotten most of 4.

EDIT:
Episode 4 was the most Star Trek like of them. With the potential ethical implications of the spore drive.

That doesn't really seem all that much different than the Romulan/Vulcan schism.

The old tried and true plot line of a ship caught in a tom loop did it. I now have a favorite episode. This was fun, actually used the cast a bit more, and just finally felt like Star Trek.

I haven't seen the latest one but the two before it were particularly depressing. In the beginning of watching this show it was like, "Oh look, replicators and warp-capable shuttles and holographic projectors over a century before that's a thing... they just really don't care, do they? I mean, what's next... freaking holodecks??"

Now there's holodecks. F*** this show.

I'm more irritated that they've made Mudd a murderer.

That, too. FAKE Mudd!

And Mudd looks older in Discovery than he did in TOS, even though TOS takes place 10 years later. Probably because Rainn Wilson is like twice as old now as Roger C. Carmel was when he played Mudd.

He really, REALLY does.

So maybe... maybe Harcourt Fenton Mudd is like the Dread Pirate Roberts. Except, y'know... not intimidating.

For as much good as I heard about this past Sunday's "Discovery" I found it to be all kinds of bad. Mudd, openly murdering people now? Let's completely forget about the poor, sick space whale that's sitting in the hangar? Apparently no matter where you are in the galaxy, you can get a message to any ship out there, anywhere, and they can be where you are within 30 minutes? There are some playful performances this episode but I can't fathom how people are swallowing this and saying "Finally! This is Trek!" This is pretty far from it. It does not care about Trek and it does not care about you.
