Favourite historical figures?

Some people like history in here. This thread is mostly for them. Ofc, even those who aren't big fans of it can partake in this discussion.

History has had a lot of interesting events and characters. Are there nay particular historical figures you like?

I must say, "historical figure" to me doesn't have to be someone who's been dead for 300 years. I mean, Hilter and Stalin died in the 20th century and it's safe to say they're historical figures. And it doesn't have to be a politician or a military person either. Jesus Christ is definitely a historical figure.

I tend not to be a big fan of state leaders and politicians, so my favourites are people who contributed to science, literature, the arts, etc. without negatively impacting the lives of many people. I don't really admire warlords or people who have possibly killed or been responsible for deaths of lots of innocent people and/or have enslaved and stepped on the rights of others. Sure, people like Julius Caeser and Alexander the Great were interesting, but I cant' say I'm a fan of them, know what I mean?

Leonardo da Vinci seemed like a very interesting individual. He was very well-rounded. I mean, he was an artist, a scientist and a musician. That is incredible. Imagine being that talented.

J.R.R. Tolkien is someone that I'd definitely bring back from the dead and have a conversation with if it was possible. Not only he created one of the best fantasy worlds ever in Lord of the Rings but he also spoke eleven or something different languages. He was a very smart and educated man.

Another author I'd like to mention is Friedrich Nietzsche. Not only was his work interesting but he also seemed like a very interesting individual.

As for artists: van Gogh comes to my mind. I like his paintings a lot and impressionist/post-impressionist art in general. That's it, really.

If I had more time to study history I’d start with all the historical firsts. Learning more about the people that did something famously for the first time is interesting. I’d like to read first hand accounts of what they thought before, during and after.

You're not alone, I heard once that Hitler is the 2nd most talked about historical figure in the world, only surprassed by Jesus Christ, with the 3rd place going to Muhammad.

That list may have changed now and he's definetly not famous in a positive sense, but there's no denying that his life has many intrigued.

Hitler has had a profound effect on modern history, pretty much a scar on human history and serves as a reminder of how easily genocide can happen.

Don't worry about it. Julius Caesar is on mine. Mostly because he was a political and strategic genius. Except for that one time he ignored the witch's warning..... March 15 was NOT a good day to have a Senate meeting. (As a matter of fact, it was bad luck to do ANY business on the Ides of any month. It was considered a '"rest day".)

I find him fascinating too. However, am I the only one who finds Brutus, Mark Antony and Cassius (significant figures in Caesar's life) just as interesting as Julius himself, if not more?

The problem with lots of those ancient historical figures is that it's hard for us to know what they really looked like or what type of people they really were. Lots of legends and myths have been spread about them throughout history.

Actually, I find that entire period of Roman history fascinating. There was a reason I took Latin for three years in high school- it was as much for the history and the culture as it was for the language.
