Yeah, with inflation NES games would have been like $119 so $70 isn't even that bad.

Honestly, it's silly to expect video games to stay the same price after 10+ years. Everything else is subjective to inflation, let alone the expanded scope of these games.

I remember buying Mortal Kombat Trilogy on N64 for $69.99 back in 1997. I remember my parents not wanting to spend $70 on me for videogames...which back in 90's money...was insane.
$70 is a lot of money now just for 1 game...now imagine that back in the 90's. Yikes. |

Most N64 games were either 49.99 or 59.99 at most stores only EB games, Babbages and the like charged way more for N64 games. As a kid I always wondered who paid those extra $10 at those stores. I remember when games were only the "big" gifts either at birthday parties and christmas so you had to be careful with what you chose but it also meant you spent hours and hours on that game which isn't as much the case anymore.
The cost of those games was because of cartridges for the most part so the whole "inflation" is not a great way to defend the rise in cost when there are many other factors that lead to that price point but whatever. At least back in the day you could return games and buy used, sure that still exists but it's not as prevalent, especially since a large portion buys digitally. And are there even places that rent games anymore? Of course this will only help streaming gaming services become more popular in the future and services like game pass. |

Digital rentals are pretty much Xbox Game Pass and PSNow, both services allow you to "rent" hundreds of games for as long as you have an active subscription. You don't own any of the games on Xbox Game Pass or PS Now, but you have them as long as your subscription is going.
It's kind of funny because digital games are basically just really long rentals. |

Inflation is definitely still a strong argument. Especially because 10 years ago, games were already on discs.

Considering how few "Big" or "Must Play" games come out every year nowadays compared to the past, it all kind of evens out, I guess.
Games cost more to develop now, with that pie getting split between an ever-growing pool of people, but there are fewer games overall coming out each year. It kinda makes sense that they'd have to make up the difference somewhere. It's like that with anything; If a company used to have 100 different products to sell, and now they only have 50, it's not crazy to expect that they'd end up charging slightly more for the remainder to make up for some of the assumed loss. Makes sense to me. I mean... I buy maybe ONE new game a year, and buy 99% of the Used, anyway, so this kinda won't affect me too much. But it doesn't seem altogether unreasonable.

We can assume most games will drop in price eventually, so even if a game starts off $70, six months later it's probably down to $50 and eventually $25 or less. Provided there are physical copies, a used market will ensure a drop in price anyway.

A lot of people are always in a rush to buy games day 1, even if they don't even play them or play like 2-3 hours and don't touch again for months. I'll never understand that, if I buy a game I intend to play it, and I only play one game at a time till I complete it or do what I want to before I move on.
I play around 100-200 games every year, mostly replaying old games and new ones, and I have time to play them all. Of course I don't really play online multiplayer much as it's a waste of time, so people who just play online all the time obviously cuts into your play time. |

I haven't spent more than $35-$40 on a game in a long time. In fact I can't even remember the last time I spent $59.99 on a game either.

$70 for games GTFO. I'd never pay that much unless it gave me a good old fashion reach around and took me behind a Denny's.

There are GameStops where you can make this dream a reality, but they tend to be in neighborhoods where it's not safe to walk home alone after.
Just saying, there are ways.

I am "El Cheapo," a penny-pincher. I have enough money to buy virtually anything I want right now, but I don't do it. My money stays in the bank. I get everything for as cheap (or in some cases, totally free), as I can. Unlike others I do not splurge, I hold every penny down to the cent.
