Well yeah, when they're smaller than most things around them, of course they'll be more on-guard.
There's at least one breed of terrier that is considered a "guard dog". Kind of. The Tibetan Terrier basically just alerts the Tibetan Mastiff to intruders

Pretty cute and looks pretty mellow, but I hate to think how much grooming is required! |

Mastiffs are pretty chill dogs. Big old slobbery teddy bears. That’s impressive hair on that Tibetan Mastiff. Makes him look extra gigantic.
