I just realized what is inherently the problem with Discovery and nuTrek... there is no grand overarching purpose or hook, no new frontier.

The Next Generation took us almost a century after Kirk and crew; the Federation's greatest enemy (the Klingon Empire) is now its most powerful ally and proves that Star Trek isn't just Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, it's the UNIVERSE.

Deep Space Nine explored a stationary locale (DS9), politics, religion, and the Dominion War, as well as the Gamma Quadrant through the Bajoran wormhole. (And also proved Star Trek isn't just a ship named USS Enterprise.)

Voyager explored the Maquis working alongside Starfleet, the Delta Quadrant, and the Borg Collective.

Enterprise went a century into the past, before the Federation even existed and explored human-Vulcan relations and the founding of Earth's first intergalactic alliances (and enemies).

Discovery... is redoing the Klingons? Showing us a species we've already exhausted in a time period we've already exhausted? With a theme (war) we've already exhausted?

Star Trek Discovery didn't have a creative vision--it had a calculated business plan to cash in on existing ideas and polish them up for a new audience, lazily coasting on established goodwill the same way JJ Abram's crappy movies did.

I could go into even more detail than that, but yes. That about sums up the broad strokes. Yes.

Sadly, this applies to more media franchises than just Star Trek.

Holy hooting hell, the season finale of STD was horrific beyond all belief. They succeeded in somehow making the Klingon homeworld look entirely bland and boring, interjected with pompous speeches contradicted by... like, everything seen in the rest of the series. And the Klingon Empire is forced to unite under that Klingon lady because she could press "START" on her iPad? No one in that whole hall of Klingons could snipe her? Beam her and/or the iPad into space?

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Maddeningly stupid.

And oh look, it's the FAKE Enterprise to cap off the show desperately reaching for any connection it can make to Kirk'n Spock.

Good article. All I'd add is that how come Star Wars gets to emerge decades later with its whole visual aesthetic intact but Star Trek needs the update?

Seems like... one more reason why they shouldn't have made (ironically named, really) "Discovery" another prequel set alongside Kirk'n Spock. There's a million reasons to set the show in the future, past the other shows... so they choose the one era they legally can't use any designs from? Why? Bizarre.

That's so weird. I wouldn't have thought the designs were "hands off." 25% different, LOL.

But hey, we get Christopher Pike and Spock on the Enterprise next season! Yay!

Fuller was the old boss. Now it's full Abrams with the mastermind who brought you "The Mummy."

Exactly. Bring in the mastermind of Khan's magic blood, yes, great idea.

We could have gone 10-20 years after Enterprise, or 25th century, or 29th century, or 31st century...

But no, 10 years before TOS. And let's redo the Klingons again.

I want to see the future timeline repopulated by tribbles, dammit! I mean, since Cisco and Co. brought some back with them..... And the Delta quadrant after the destruction of the Borg by Janeway's gambit.

Alright so I binged the series like two days ago.

What the hell was that? Where's the levity? I don't mean "Dude, this show is about aliens and teleportation mushrooms, make it more comedic. Don't take it so seriously! Only realistic shows deserve to take themselves seriously." I mean it's actually depressing to watch. It might have worked if any of the characters were engaging but they're not. Not to mention how the plot just makes my head hurt when trying to connect this to the other Star Trek seasons.

It's dreary, full of pointless shock value, bland characters and the plot is nonsense. This show sucks.

And now they've signed a 5 year extension to Kurtzman's contract. Look at him, the little weasel.

Ugh. Because of course they are.

Heaven forbid CBS call up Ronald D Moore...

Because of course Abrams had forever screwed over any future for the series before his films. If one takes his schlock-fests as canon.

Well, this could do a lot to restore goodwill...

http://collider.com/new-star-trek-se...aptain-picard/

"The new deal comes as rumblings about another Star Trek series, featuring Patrick Stewart reprising his role as Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Capt. Pickard, have been heating up. Sources say Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman, who left Discovery after season one, are attached to the Stewart-led reboot. CBS TV Studios declined to confirm the Stewart project as sources say a deal is far from completed and may not happen despite the fact that the actor recently teased his potential return to the franchise."
