I'd call it almost a certainty. Guaranteed there was conversations about, "Who can we bring into the show from the other shows that would still be around in the 31st century? Data, no, he'll be busy on Picard... who else?" Someone who also remembers the glory days of Starfleet and the Federation.
Can't be coincidence that suddenly they're "remembering" the Trill. Quote:

I saw the first new "Short Trek" called "Q&A" (which is a waste of what could have been a great title for a Q episode). It's got Spock and Number One, when Spock first came aboard the Enterprise. Basically they get stuck in the turbolift and start smiling and singing. It's maddening levels of bad. And I mean bad. And if that wasn't enough, they show the turbolift corridors and they're like labyrinthian and warehouse-sized, like something from the JJ movies. Also shocked and disappointed to see this was written by Michael Chabon... the showrunner of Picard who took over from Kurtzman. Not a good sign!

Funny thing is, I named my dog Dax. She's a good dog. Also, turns out Lurians (Morn) and Cardassians were briefly on screen, too...

Jason Isaacs says if you don't like STD, then you're a racist and a right wing lunatic.

Tangentially related: I really, really liked the idea of Captain Lorca being this PTSD-riddled Starfleet veteran leaning hard into Section 31 type ideals and compromises. And then it's revealed he's just a mustache-twirling Mirror Universe baddie. How disappointing. All subtlety and depth, gone. But that sword was sweet. Just imagine how awesome a revamped Discovery with Lorca and Georgiou as main cast could have been. Two captains with two different moral standards, fighting the same war and hopefully not each other? That would have been awesome.

I was discussing Star Wars and Star Trek with a group of friend last night, and wanted to share the example I made. "Imagine if Rian Johnson wrote Star Trek: Picard. Old Man Picard would have tried to kill Riker and Troi's emo son and failed, then run off to Ferenginar to pout. Michael Burnham shows up years later and hands Picard his old Starfleet combadge... which Picard promptly tosses to the ground." May it never come to pass.

Who needs good stories, when you can imbue your work with a "good message"?
And if you don't want a "good message" you are sub-human nazi scum and should be un-personed and canceled. |

More of the same of Season 1; Burnham is overpowering, but Saru, Stamets, etc are pretty great. Not much interested in Pike. Enjoying Section 31 a lot more than I expected going in.

I just binged season 2...
Just why? Why focus so much on drama when when you can't even make it good drama? Like the cyborg woman, they literally dont bother to give her personal scenes until the episode she dies, so why should we give a **** about the character we barely know dying? Clearly it would have worked better if she was a greater prescence. And when it comes to characters that get more exposure, it seems like we can't even get a chance to know most of them outside of heavy drama horseshit, it's like they can't show us levity in a decent way. Their attempts at levity is mostly from Tilly and she's just annoying. Then there's the attempts to explain the contradictions with the other shows... Why didn't Spock/Sarek/Amanda ever mention Michael and why was Voyager's breakthroughs/Bajor Wormhole considered big deals when the spore drive was a thing? Because the events of STD, the Discovery crew's existance and the Spore Drive tech are classified and everyone who knows are strictly forbidden from ever talking about it under any circumstances. That's right, the reason Spock never mentioned his sister is because he was told not to... And season 3 will be set 700 years after Picard, presumably just to avoid any further contradictions. What a goddamn turd of a show this is. I'm a little scared what I'll get from Picard and saddened that the most promising upcoming Trek is a cartoon headed by a Rick & Morty writer... |
