New Topps TMNT Cards

I assumed it would be 'Rise' stuff, but nope, looks like it's for older collectors, at least to start with! Coming this summer. I'm kind of excited already to find out if anyone finds any of the autographed cards.

The Topps Company and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) are back together again.

As part of a newly-inked deal between Topps and Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products, TMNT returns to the company that first featured the famed sewer-dwelling brothers on trading cards released in 1989. The first release under the new partnership is a TMNT limited edition set featuring comic book artwork, including new art from famous illustrators from the franchise. Fans can expect Topps The Art of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trading cards to release later this summer.

Additionally, the new set will include sketch cards from a number of top tier artists. There’s also a chance to find autographed cards from artists such as Michael Dooney, Jim Lawson, Steve Lavigne, and more.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who first appeared in comics created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, published by Mirage Studios in 1984. The original Topps partnership included cards based on the original animated series and the early ’90s series of live-action films.

I used to buy the sh** out of those Topps cards. I never chewed so much pink gum in my life.

Wow, you totally called it.

Any idea how much the similar Star Wars sets sold for?

Anyone know if limited edition sets are bigger or is this still going to be like the regular little card packs? If similar to those other ones.

What a nice surprise! So glad they getting back in touch with the vintage Mirage artist stable too. I hope we get to see previews soon! Guess I'll be on the lookout for the card packs!

"Limited" can mean many things, hard to say how Topps will proceed. I am a baseball card collector and know that lately Topps has been selling products via their website rather than hobby distributors and the retail setting. (This way, they can keep the entire profit and cut out the middlemen).

For example, on the higher-end, the Brooklyn Collection this year was priced at $1000 per box and only 1000 boxes were made. For other, more typical, releases, they sell complete sets for $99.95 with one autograph or chase card included at random. They have also created lower end $70 boxes for some other releases with 1-2 hits per box.

For TMNT, I can see the market being at $100-150 price point.

Did you stop by the booth and say hi? My wife and I are there every show with a wall of Marvel Legends.

Thanks for the info, that's pretty much what I'd pictured when I read "limited" on it, imaging full boxed sets at a steep price.

It would be nice though if they'd also sell them in the little packs in the stores like in the old days, or some larger packs that are, say, ten or 20 dollars worth of random cards, rather than having to drop $100+ at once. Not sure I could justify paying a hundred dollars, but if there were smaller packs in stores I'd certainly grab one (or a few) now and then. That would be fun.

Oh wow, this is excellent news!

I honestly have not collected trading cards since I was in middle school BUT my love for them has rejuvenated since I work in a company that releases Horror trading cards. I have been learning about what types of sets were released back in the '70s and '80s.

I have been wanting to go back and finish collecting my original set of trading cards from the '87 cartoon in addition to purchasing full boxes of the movies sets. I mean...they are cheap enough.

With this new Topps set, I am all for purchasing something along the lines of a Factory Box or Sealed Box. I do miss the days of just going to a random grocery store and picking up a few packs of random cards...getting pissed at all the repeats I'd get in the mix, haha. However, I guess I'll be keeping an eye on this thread since I would miss out otherwise.

Getting a sketch/autographed card would be pretty sweet!

The 100-card base set comes on 96-point card stock and is split between 73 earlier comic covers and 27 new artwork images. Jim Lawson, Kevin Eastman, Michael Dooney and Steve Lavigne are among the featured illustrators. Base parallels include Green (#/99), Purple (#/50), Orange (#/25), Blue (#/10), and Red (1/1) versions.

Anyone know what they mean by "parallels" and how this associates with the Turtles' colors? Are the numbers related to rarity, or...?

Not entirely understanding everything I'm reading, but still look forward to seeing these come out and if anyone gets something cool. Hope to get a box if the price isn't ridiculous.

edit: Went looking to see if there were any pre-orders out there and found a couple sites listing them for about $129.95. Think this is about accurate and as expected or might it be cheaper elsewhere when they are released?

'Parallels' feature the same art but with some slight variation, most often coloured borders. Looking at the design of this set, the variation seems to be in the colour of the 'Art of TMNT' stamp: the base set would be grey, the parallels would be green, purple, orange, blue and red. The numbers are indeed related to rarity, with the red one seemingly having a print run of just one set, if I understood it correctly.

And as for the price, I was hoping it would be a bit lower, but that sounds about right.

Still have a binder full of a complete Topps cartoon series (thanks Rose) and a near complete set from the 1st and 2nd movie...fell off by the 3rd. Might be fun to collect with Trey.

Those prices! Whooosh!

https://www.diamondcardsonline.com/non-sports/

I currently work for a company that releases Wax Packs (mostly Horror), so I understand having to price things accordingly with an official license. However close to $900!!! Yikes!

I was hoping I'd be able to somehow get my hands on a sampling (like a single pack) or at least a base set without goodies. This is more than I'd personally like to spend. I'd rather blow money on statues/figures.
