Megadeth

or 'Megadave' if you prefer

So the mentioning of Megadeth in the Iron Maiden thread has given me the idea of doing a Megadeth thread.

Any fans? Any one not like them? Favorite song? Least favorite Song? Want to complain about Mustaine as a person or/and a Singer?

I'm a big fan of Megadeth. Their early stuff on a technical level were leaps and bounds over a lot of other bands. Mustaine is a great guitarist and songwriter

Favorite album for me is 'Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?' from 1986

Favorite song is Good Mourning/Black Friday, from that album

Megadeth is a band that I have a rather interesting history with. When I first got into metal, Megadeth was one of the first bands I checked after I was done checking all of the most popular Iron maiden and Metallica songs. And it became my 2nd favourite metal band after Iron Maiden at some point in 2009.

Rust in Piece is the best album by them by far, imo, but it HAS to be the original recording, NOT the remaster. Peace Sells would be their 2nd best album.

KIMB and SFSGSW are good enough albums, but I rarely listen to them all the way through.

Countdown and Youthanasia are hit and miss, especially the latter, but still solid records. After that, Megadeth's album get worse overall. That being said, some of their later albums have some decent tracks. The System has Failed has Of Mice and Men and Kick the Chair, for instance.

Also, Thirteen and Endgame are pretty solid albums for 21st century Megadeth's standards. I liked Dystopia on my first listen of it back when it came out, but didn't enjoy the 2nd time around as much.

The problem with Megadeth, other than Dave's known issues, is the fact that Dave's plans for the band were ALWAYS an attempt at beatinh Metallica at their own game. When Metallica made the Black Album, Megadeth also went heavy metal/hard rock with Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia. When Metallica went back to their roots with Death Magnetic, Dave came up with Endgame.

But then Metallica sorta stopped making music for several years(no, Lulu doesn't count) while Megadeth kept making new stuff. This time they no longer had Metallica to beat. You can tell Dave lacked ideas in Super Collider and Dystopia. After two pretty good modern thrash albums like Endgame and Thirteen he released two mediocre albums?

It's kinda strange looking back, since I don't listen to Megadeth so much these days. I'm gonna guess he reason I really got into Megadeth when I was 18-19 was because their lyrics are more political than your average metal band, and that was a point in my youth where I was starting to get interested in global affairs.

As for favourite songs? Hmm lemme think...

Peace Sells
Devil's Island
In My Darkest Hour
Five Magics
Rust in Piece... Polaris
Holy Wars... The Punishment Duo
Foreclosure of a Dream
Ashes in Your Mouth
Addicted to Chaos
Looking Down the Cross
(yes, I know it's a cover)

I don't think the "Cryptic Writings" album gets enough credit.

Quite a good list. Addicted to Chaos in particular is one of my favorites

Looking Down the Cross is 100% a Megadeth song. Dave wrote it.

I love some of the songs on there. 'I'll get Even' is probably my favorite on that record

Oh, I could swear it was a cover... or maybe I'm confusing it with other track on the album.

"Cryptic Writings" was one of our standard Weight Room Jams in high school. It was allowed because it was a fairly "clean" record, so it was a rare choice that the kids could generally all tolerate and the adults weren't going to "ban". So I brought that CD in a lot. I like "Trust" and "Almost Honest" a lot, some of my all-time favorites.

As far as the "Risk" album goes, I think "Insomnia" is one of the best opening tracks of any record, ever. "Prince of Darkness" is another good track. And I know Dave hates it, but "Crush 'Em" is the perfect song for a tough workout or getting ready to kick someone's ass. So it gets high marks in my book. I actually use it at work as part of the setlist when I teach group classes.

They did a cover of No More Mister Nice Guy by Alice Cooper that wasn't half bad. I still prefer the original, though.

They're fun to listen to, but I don't have much of them on my playlists. I spend more time with Maiden and Priest. If I want gimmicky stuff I'll do Dragonforce or something.
