I think Playmates figured that they should not go in the direction of a Turtle Wrestlers sub-wave due to the cases with Shell Slammin’ Mike not selling well in late 1991, so Playmates chose to focus on the popularity of Treasure Trolls, The Universal Monsters, and all of the animated properties that received action figure treatment in 1992 and 1993.

Not producing every supporting character from issue 7 of the Archie Comics TMNT Adventures was definitely a missed opportunity.

The Hasbro WWF figures were never high (top 3) on any of the holiday toy lists in the early to mid 90s for there to be a wrestling themed TMNT sub-wave with the Archie Comics original characters to be in.

It’s much harder to find toy surveys from the year 1993 than it is for the toys of 1989 to 1992. Mighty Max from Blue Bird was not a top 5 toy during the holiday seasons of 1993 to 1994 or 1995 in the US, but it was a hit boys toy line in the way that Polly Pocket was girls from 1990 into the rest of the 90s.

TMNT fans had Turtlemania ‘90 to thank for 90s toy scalpers, large TMNT toy displays in stores, empty toy shelves, toys on reserve and layaway, upset parents, long lines at stores, DIY TMNT action figure necklaces, basic and sub-waves with turtle variants, and the mention of TMNT everywhere. The original Playmates toy line was easier to collect from the summer of 1988 to the spring of 1989, but Turtlemania ‘90 made finding rare and uncommon basic wave characters worse than it was in even late 1989.

With the exception of the FW cartoon characters, the 1990 TMNT movie sold the 1st and 3rd (Casey Jones wave) basic wave figures better than the 1987 FW mini-series and 1988 FW syndicated series.

1990 was the ultimate year for TMNT (the very peak of the franchise). The 1990 film changed everything! People tend to forget that fact.

I suppose if I absolutely HAD to erase somthing from TMNT history, it would be the Next Mutation series. It wasn't very well liked, it didn't last very long, and removing it would have minimal impact on the franchise.

As a casual fan of TMNT, I would erase everything from The Coming Out of Their Shells Tour to the present. TMNT 2 SOTO was fun to watch and very much a product of its time, but the 1984 Mirage Studios comic book, 1988 FW syndicated cartoon, 1990 movie, and 1988 Playmates toy line are what most people know the Turtles for.

By marking August of 1990 as when TMNT jumped the shark for me, the cool plastic Burger King Collector Cups from July of 1990 are in the safe zone. The release of the TMNT Collector Cups perfectly coincided with the ongoing Turtlemania and the first 3 basic waves (ends with the Casey Jones wave) of the original Playmates toy line.

Out of the Shadows, **** that movie. Very few movies legitemately piss me off and Out of the Shadows take the top spot in that tiny crowd. I will never quite understand how you can make a sequel to a movie everyone complained about, just to end up with an even worse movie....
