Do any of you have kids? I'm a little iffy on how I'm made to seem the least qualified dude in the room to weigh in on video games with the new generation when I'm the only one that does. Jester, feel free.

My 14 year old ebbs and wanes on this or that, but she's definitely not itching to play anything retro I'm dabbing at (my Metroid run-through in preparation for Dread, for example). She's all about Stray right now, a PS5 game about a cat. So am I, it seems. Also her interest in "Shredder's Revenge" seems to have only extended to pity for listening to me trying to get to wife to jump in and try it for one day and the wife saying no, and no again. Subsequent days it has always been a "nah."

You guys would be proud of me, though. I genuinely got irritated with my wife when she first came in and said, "Wow! That looks great for an old game! I kind of remember that!" and I had to reprimand her that it was a brand new game that came out freshly the same day.

That's like expecting your parents to know about rap music or their parents rock n roll. There's always a generational divide so having kids doesn't exactly make anyone more qualified than anybody else on what's going on with the youth, especially when they don't make any effort to understand them.

We all live in the real world just as you do. We all probably know some kids, as has already been stated and I'm Mexican, so I have a pretty f*cking huge family and guess what? There's a lot of kids in it. There's no need to hot tag Jester or flex having a kid like it lends anymore credibility to your point than any of ours.

We're all going to have contradicting experiences, but as I've already stated, things are far different for kids today than they were when you and even I were kids. And even then, when I was a kid, everyone played "retro" games. It was called handheld gaming. You know, that thing that was incredibly popular despite always being a generation behind. No different than the indie games of today.

Oh OK. Yes, having a big family where other family members have kids around you is exactly the same as being the parent of some. Clearly. I can't imagine how this wouldn't give you exactly the same insight as someone who raised children day in, day out since birth.

I'm now more annoyed that nobody ever smartened me up that Turo was Mexican. I need to know these things so I can dial up (or down) the Casual Good-Natured Racism the way I do with guys like Prowler and Coola. C'mon guys, help me out once in a while.

Er, to the topic... I do not and never will have kids, but most of my friends do and anecdotally I would agree with Turo's evaluation. A lot of kids like retro and retro-inspired games, for reasons such as they inspire them to use their imagination and appeal more to their childlike sense of wonder. Also, they tend to offer more of a "straight and to the point" gaming experience, which kids appreciate. Whereas the more modern stuff tends to be a lot more story-driven with more complicated controls and so on; some of my friends' kids do play those games as well, but they tend to mash the button to skip all cutscenes, take zero interest in what the game is actually about, and then just run around aimlessly doing whatever they want until they get bored of it.

Again, anecdotal, but fairly consistent. I don't think there's a huge overwhelming preference either way amongst kids, and also, as mentioned, any individual kid's tastes are inevitably going to shift as they get older. I think kids just play whatever grabs their attention, frankly.

And as I've already stated, having children doesn't make you more qualified than anyone else. I don't need to wipe a kid's ass to be able to talk about what they're into. Your one kid in your house who you raised is hardly evidence against world-wide trends. This isn't exactly parent having secret information. Feeding a kid, buying them clothes, and keeping a roof over their head doesn't magically boost your credibility when discussing what type of games are popular with children.

Especially when your main argument is that you have kids. You say you struck a nerve, which btw, couldn't be further from the truth, yet you're the one who flat out felt like we were attacking your parenthood by making a point about video games. You wondered what made you the least qualified, well, there you go. You've failed to acknowledge any actual points because you're not able to counter-argue any of them. Which is why you've deflected the entire conversation into being about who has kids.

LMAO! I mean, it wasn't really a secret. I think I might've mentioned it a few times over the years.

Well since Lollipop Chainsaw is getting a full on remake, I can take that off the list.

The real killer is with Gen Y and younger, there is something about who they are that grants them these weird perceptions and limited vision. When I was a kid I didn't grow up with Led Zeppelin or Jim Morrison, right? But I had some awareness of who they are - like all I had to do was hear a song on an old radio station a couple times or see even just a hint of the 60's on T.V. to connect me with it enough that I had a general awareness of that whole movement and so on.

But kids today? They'd look at you with a blank stare as if anything before them is inexplicable. For example, Generation X experienced both a life without cell phones yet also came of age when cell phones first became a widespread thing. I was just discussing this with our 19 year old here the other day; and I'm like "honey you've got to get a grasp of reality - your experiences are your own and that's great but you are hardly the first person to step foot on Earth and experience technology".

In many ways I'm more capable on my computer and phone than she is, but the narrative amidst her generation is as if we are all ancient-grandparents who know nothing. Which I think is sort of common amidst all young-people except that this generation of kids lace their beliefs with false narratives about racism and oppression and all sorts of other bull$#!( that generation X largely began putting an end to across mass society.

My whole point? To what you said earlier - I think a lot of those generational partitions come from young people's ignorance or sense of self-importance. And their attitude seems to proliferate across society for everyone to experience, whether you have kids or not.

The only caveat being that they're neutering the soundtrack.

We now know that Super Mario RPG is getting the HD treatment.

I have the SNES Classic and that game is on there. Perhaps I should give it a shot?

They're calling it that right now but it isn't that. It's not quite like Zelda: Wind Waker getting the 1080p treatment from 480p, with an existing engine underneath. They have to completely rebuild Super Mario RPG from the ground up so it's a full-on remake, not a remaster.

Too bad they (so far) didn't add anything extra. There was literally no reason all to not have had Luigi in the original.
