So in "A Catwoman from Channel 6," April essentially becomes a catgirl/furry
You know this is something I never thought about as a kid or growing up because the original cartoon pre-dated the internet and all its influence.
But mutated cat April, they essentially turned April into a furry in Season 2 and flew over all our heads: This episode aired in 1988. Why out of all animals did they choose for her to become mutated into a cat? She essentially became a catgirl, or a furry, in "ancient" times before the internet. God how did this fly over our heads all these years? I'm just realizing this now almost 30 years after this episode aired. |

lolz....
I'd say because cats historically have been associated with femininity... often the darker side. See the Val Lewton horror/thriller classic "The Cat People" (1942). Also, April is defined by being curious (which makes her a successful investigative reporter but usually gets her into trouble), and the old saying "Curiosity killed the cat." Funny thing about Richard Merwin, is that despite all the insensitive and chauvinistic jokes throughout the episode, the guy is a HUGE liberal on social media from what I've been about to find. Maybe he had a change of heart after he wrote his two TMNT episodes for season 2. I honestly don't know if "furry" was a thing when this episode came out. The episode itself has lots in common with vintage monster/horror movies, especially vintage werewolf films.

When did the whole furry thing even begin, maybe it wasn't even a thing back then, from my lack of understanding most furries seem to begin with the ones who grew up with anthropomorphic shows in the 80s for the most part.

For my part I'm shocked/baffled that some people seriously think "catgirls and/or furries" only exist thanks to the internet. You can't be serious.
Some people obviously missed Genus Comics (in print since 1993) and like, so much of Ralph Bakshi's career, apparently. But yeah, these are not new and/or shocking developments. Although I don't think they specifically did Catgirl April to appeal to those tastes. On the other hand, wouldn't shock me even a little bit if some of the creators were into it when they came up with it, nor if it made certain young and impressionable audience members feel "some kinda way" that they couldn't explain at the time, which then led them to chase that feeling much later in life. Anyways, yeah, WTF makes these things pop in your head all of a sudden? Quote:
Been a thing for a while. A very, very long while.

Speaking of Fritz the Cat, did you know Robert Crumb used to be sexually attracted to Bugs Bunny? Certainly explains a lot about his comics.

"Worse" is subjective, sir. I always root for the story, and for The Story not to be boring. This qualifies.

I did already know about this, it's not something I googled because of this thread, but as it turns out... There's quite a following of Cat-April. Finding fan art of her is not hard.
Spoiler:
And that's only some of the SFW stuff! ... Boy, the /co/ drawthreads sure is a weird place... |

#1 and #3 are the best, rest are "meh."
Catgirl April (in-canon and discounting fan art) is still FW April, so... would still smash. To be fair I'd overlook a lot of things in favor of FW April. Like, if she had leprosy or worse, then I probably wouldn't. Probably.

If mutation automatically makes her a furry... then isn't the same true for Splinter? And actually MORE than her because it wasn't temporary? After all, after his chance to be human again didn't last, he made peace with being a rat man and prefers it.

Some chicks dig Splinter. I'unno how many or how vocal but I know they exist.
I mean, rats have huge... hearts.

Well, I have seen people refer to Splinter as "Rat Daddy". Probably some DILF factor involved.

No she does not exhibit any furry behaviour.
A furry by definition is “an enthusiast for animal characters with human characteristics, usually fur covered animals”. Now Raphael From TMNT IDW comic is a furry for Alopex. They even kissed. |

Catgirl and fishwoman... Those eps have always reminded me that that's two of the ones I would not want to be, but would have over the years had/have the biggest chance of. >.< lol
A cat is so boring and stereotypical as the go-to for women. (There's your "why," Cubed.) And as much as I love fish as pets and as critters in general...no thank you. April there...egads. And 2012's Fishface just proves the turnout can't get any better. |
