It might be a good idea to tip. My family orders take out food, but I don't know if they tip or not.

It depends on the service and the quality of food. If you have been going to the same place for years then yes, place a tip. If not, no. I have been going to a place for years where I have established a relationship with the workers. Speaking Mandarin with them as well. They are worthy of my tips because they know my usual cuisine.

But why? What extra service are they providing?

No.
A tip accommodates an additional courtesy & comfort effort through hosting or foot traffic service.
You already accommodated the business in the transaction of ordering and picking up your food.

I don't, I mean it's no different than picking-up food from a fast food place after placing your order. I only tip if I'm dining in, or if they are delivering the food.

Nah, they're not waiting on you, returning to check to see that everything is fine, refilling your glass, etc.

If putting food in a box to go is a tipable action, then I sure as hell have done some (unrelated) job duties in the past that aught to deserve tips, but sadly isn't a thing people do for it. lol
