Star Trek Online

I bought the game 10 years ago and dabbled for like 3 days... today I decided to reinstall it and screw around. See what's going on.

Not bad! There are tons of missions and it feeds you them quick. It does appear that CBS is mandating a lot of STD and STP content... like, right now I'm doing a mission where it's Seven of Nine and Michael Burnham visiting the planet of Abraham Lincoln and the alien thing from TOS, doing a bunch of tests. One of which, you revisit the trapping of the Red Angel, and Seven of Nine shoots nanites into Control. A hybrid emerges, which I guess you have to fight next.

Free to play and install, btw.

My laptop did not like STO at all.

Which is weird; it plays the Mass Effect and Arkham trilogies just fine.

I've never seen or played this game, but... Jesus, guy, grammar's important.

Played it for about a day straight. It's got very well-written stories by people (fans of actual Trek) who give a damn.

Unfortunately... it's also very actiony. For Star Trek, it's strange that the game wants me to constantly phaser to death about 20 people per mission and if it's not that, then it's blowing up a bunch of "enemy ships." But still, I'll take it to get to the nice story stuff. It was great hearing so much new(ish) Nimoy material in this.

Ehh... apparently Stamets (from STD) has a big role in this. I stumbled onto a Briar Patch patrol mission and evidently he's your mission control for it. Apparently he has made the leap from the 23rd century to the 25th. Same actor doing the voiceover, too.

I can't believe it's ten years old and even more disbelief that it's still being supported. I've never played it.... love Trek though.

I hate new Trek but this is pretty alright. And I'm saying that after I just played a mission where Michael Burhnam's replicant comes to the 25th century and rejoined Starfleet.

*edit: Just went through the Bajoran wormhole and then came back and boarded Deep Space Nine. I admit, I was a little sentimental when I heard the DS9 theme as I did.

Played through this new "House Divided" stuff.

It's a lot of "blam blam!" type stuff, but again, the stories are pretty good. They really found a way to weave in the STD Klingorcs into real Trek in a believable way. And make lemonade out of lemons... mostly.

At least you get to kill a lot of STD Klingorcs and they're the bad guys. Also, hanging out with Martok was cool. And the Gowron guy voices a Klingorc dude in it that's the real bad guy.

Yeah, this has been a lot of fun, the more I play. There's whole "episodes" where you interact with lots of people from TNG, DS9, VOY and so on with the real people doing the voices and it's pretty engaging.

Like, the Iconians become a big menace... and there's a complicated (but brilliant) over-arching story where they use the aliens that kidnapped Riker into subspace and operated on him are a pawn of them, and the tiny alien crab things from TNG season 1 that go into your mouth and possess you are also revealed as a tool of them.

I've been dicking around with the latest updates to the story. The new stuff is pretty crazy... now you go on missions from Admiral Janeway (yes, Mulgrew did the voice for the first time in the game) and Mirror Universe Janeway and Mirror Universe Leeta, who is now the leader of the Terrans. And as of the last chapter, Ilia from Star Trek: The Motion Picture (!!!) suddenly materialized somewhere, unconscious.

Wild stuff, from clear Star Trek fans.

I've been wobbling on getting an Xbox, and this is something I'd try out if I did. But also, I have a bunch of Switch games I've never finished because I always just end up playing Pokemon.

You don't want to just play it on PC? It's DEFINITELY worth a play, if nothing else for the stories alone, and the DS9 chapters. Some really cool stuff even if the gameplay may be at times super repetitive and meh.

Man they really milk the mirror-universe concept. Star Trek did the "multiverse" first in wider pop culture. But to always revisit it as if it was that great? Ehhhh.
