I'll shoot you a PM, Ch'rell.

Experimenting with ankle pivot creation. So far I'm really liking this method!

Wow, it really seems to add some needed articulation, is it tricky to do?

^It is a bit, yeah! But the good thing is that if you take off too much in reshaping the ankles, you can always sculpt it back.

New idea...

So I really like this -- I'd paint it up to look more/less like Casey Jones in the 2007 TMNT flick, perhaps even with the silver mask -- but dang that Sportsmaster is tall! With the vintage Casey head, he ends up being a touch taller than most DCUC figures. So if I go with this idea I'm thinking I'll try replacing the legs or cutting some height out somewhere.

Looks great, Wes. How did Casey's head get translucent?

It's a cast made by a fellow customizer! That translucent substance is sturdy stuff, too... took me nearly two hours to hollow that thing out, and it spewed white powder the entire time. x_x

2 hours?! what the heck did you use...the sharp end of a thumbtack?! you need to get one of these:
http://www.dremel.com/en-us/Accessor...l.aspx?pid=114
they come in various shapes and sizes and work WONDERS for hollowing out or shaving down parts! it'll have hollowed out that head perfectly in less than 30 seconds!

Ha ha, good call! I have a smaller one of those, but it's not so much good for hollowing out things as it is for creating mushroom cap holes and I always fear using it because of my tendency to screw up. (Admittedly, that was part of the reason for the length of time I spent working on this head -- I wanted to make absolutely sure I didn't sand all the way through it.) I'll have to see about getting a larger one, though!

Never caught that Casey when you first posted it, Slash will be great I'm sure but Mr. Jones has me more excited. Can't help it, I'm a fan.

I need to figure out a way to shorten Mr. Jones before moving forward with him, since I want him to be a bit shorter than my 2K3 Shredder. As it is, dude is too damned tall.

Or too damned short, if one wanted to pose him with the new TMNT classic figs.

So as Lordmylar and I were just discussing... if you're planning to repaint these figures, you'll have to contend with some serious paint rub issues at the shoulders. (I kinda feel bad for whoever bought those $400 custom paint jobs, since it didn't look like the customizer did anything with the shoulders. Imagine having paid that much for a figure only to have the paint scratch as soon as you tried to pose it! I suppose a wash would be a little less susceptible to paint rub, though.) Basically, to combat it, I did as much sanding and grinding as I could around the shoulder area... and since that still wasn't enough, I ultimately removed the arm and went to town inside the shoulder cavity. That took quite a bit of doing, too. Raph's shoulders are apparently the most recessed of all of the Turtles, so I had to grind his torso down quite a bit just to be able to slide the pin out of the shoulder hinge. (Thankfully, the area is mostly covered by the plastron.)

Anyway, while I know what I'm doing now, it feels like way too much work to get these things moving properly -- DCUC figures require a whole lot less attention at the shoulders and you end up with a superarticulated figure when you're done. That said, once I finish with Slash, I think I may try another repaint with Mikey. His shoulders aren't recessed at all, which should make removing them (and thus sanding down the shoulder cavity to combat paint rub) that much easier.

I didn't think of this before, but it's possible to crack the turtle at the torso on the side where the line is using a small flathead screwdriver. Then you could take the arms out with the shoulder discs, make the needed space to prevent wear on the torso, then replace the arm afterward.
I still think staining the figure is a good idea though, that's going to save you some serious headache if any rubbing does occur. with your paint app. At least the old color won't stick out like a sore thumb.
I may actually try that this weekend when i get more work done on mine.

Has anyone done it easily? I've cracked a few Playmates Toys figures before -- it was pretty goddamned difficult and I practically ruined the pieces I was separating. Even cracking Slash to get his shell was no easy feat, and removing Raph's shell was a chore if ever there was one! I ended up cutting it in half at the belt line and prying it loose with downward (and upward, for the upper piece) force.

If you do this I would recommend right where the belt goes in on the side of the figure, since there's already kind of a gap there. Whatever you do, DON'T LEAVE THE HEAD ON THE FIGURE. Since the seam goes all the way to the ball on the neck I think that would be disastrous. If you do happen to crack it, post pics. I wanna see the guts of these guys.
