Ninja Turtles are still a thing, right?
Thought I'd share a TMNT reference I recently observed. In the NBC show Superstore season 3 episode 3. The employees are stocking shelves and mention some lunch boxes. One employee makes a comment asking about Ninja Turtles and if they are still "a thing." I couldn't find the scene to share but a photo at 0:52 shows the merch on the second shelf behind the lady. Doesn't look like official merch to me.

What do you expect from casual writers for a NBC show?

I was curious if the product in the background is authentic. Seems like a lost opportunity for some product placement. But then I suppose the reference would need to be more of a positive one. Wouldn't the NBC show need to get approval for mentioning a trademarked brand?

Literally NOTHING on those shelves looks legit. I imagine using real products would require permission from too many license holders to afford using actual products. It's the same as when Spaceballs just slapped movie images on other items to make it look like they had real merch. (Lucasfilms would not allow any merch because it was too close to Star Wars.) Looks like they just made something that sort of looked like what they wanted and hoped no one would notice the differences.

I think you nailed it. NBC really has no room to talk.
(And, seriously who watches broadcast TV anymore?) |

We need more context, who is this show for exactly? It could very well be referencing the original show still being "a thing". I'm sure all of us have walked through a store and mentioned "is X still a thing?", I remember people would constantly mention that about Power Rangers many years ago when people thought it had been cancelled for years while it had had continuous shows non-stop since it started.
So that's what I think, if TMNT are still a thing now that the movies and nick show are gone that's another question but not relevant to what this tv show said. |
