Final Fantasy Vlll best FF game ever.

Once you played Vlll, you don't need to play any other FF game. You played the best of the best of the best. We don't need to level up to be strong, we need our drawing magic and junction system from our GFs.

It had the best hero in Squall Leonhart and his amazing Dad Laguna. We get 2 love stories with Squall and Rinoa, and Laguna and Raine . It has the best cowboy in Irvine, The best guy on coffee in Zell, and the best girl and my personal favorite in Selphie, she does do crazy from time to time so watch out.
No other FF tops this, and that includes 7, and its remake. I am so upset that 7 gets there remake, and 8 does not. What are they thinking? 8 was the better game.

VIII is better than VII, anyway. At least it contains an ending.

Final Fantasy is such a weird thing. Rather than most series, where each game learns from the mistakes of previous games in the series, each one getting better and better and all that... Final Fantasy's mandate has always been to completely through everything out that worked in the past and start completely from scratch, each game. Very strange.

Anyway, battle system was pretty dodgy in VIII but a strong story with a trippy time-travel/paradox ending.

The ending was a loop, the teams beats Ultimecia who while dying passes her powers onto Edea in the pass to once again do the events of FF8 doing a time loop kinda of ending.
FF8 rock. I love 13 also, and 9. but 8 was always my favorite.

FF8 was the first Final Fantasy to be worse than its predecessor. It's still a good 8/10 game.

FFIX is the best imo. It feels almost like a fairy tale and a dream.

V was way worse than IV. Significantly.

I can get the IX being a fairy tale thing. Though I don't know if they've improved it in the newer versions of it since, but on PS1 FF IX was very, very slow. You'd have to wait like 10 seconds to begin each battle, etc.. Rather cumbersome. And it kind of sucked once you got to the last disc, suddenly you couldn't access a lot of the old towns you used to... simply because they didn't have enough room. Probably the happiest ending in IX since IV, which remains my personal favorite. I was so happy they made FF IV: The After Years on Wii.

I've never finished any Final Fantasy game...but I've played a lot of them so i'll weigh in..

Final Fantasy I - I was a fan of the 8 bit theater as a kid so when I saw an NES cartridge with the strategy guide I quickly bought it. It was old school but I considered myself a retrogamer so I enjoyed it a lot.

FF II I remember not liking it, but only played it very little on an emulator.

FF III Only played it for a little bit on a friends DS, I found the class system confusing and it looked ugly and played too old school.

FF IV Loved it, I played the GBA port.

FF VI Loved it, I played the SNES FFIII version.

FF VII Marketing and Nostalgia but this is the game I most envied as a Nintendo 64 owner and when I got a PS2 it was one of the first games I bought, I really liked it, not sure how it has aged but it was still fun in the early PS2 era.

FFVIII Never liked the character designs and only played it for an hour or so and bored playing it but I thought it had to be good because it was a FF game.

FF IX Also played it for only a few hours but I loved the feel of the game and reminded me of a simpler FF time before it evolved

FF X Never played it, always put off by the art style but I was always tempted to get it because Rikku was my waifu. I heard it's good.

Vagrant Story I remember a friend told me there was a FF (XII?) that was set in the Vagrant Story universe, but I loved Vagrant Story, I wonder if I would like that FF as well.

Man Squaresoft was such a great company before the Merger with Enix, and I was an Enix fanboy, I even re-created the Enix Forum after the forums shut down when the two companies merged. But Squaresoft pumped out RPGs after RPGs, each with their own unique art style and stories.

I grew out of RPGs pretty much around the same time most people did in the early PS2 era but it had been my favorite Genre since Super Mario RPG came out. So that definitely didn't help Square or Enix but whatever, weird to see such a giant company fall.

I want to re-buy the FF games but Square Enix has such sh-tty re-releases that there's no "definite" version of any game. I see them on Steam but people always say those are not the "good" versions that I need the SNES rom with the X translation and the XX modded in to make it the best of all versions so I end up buying nothing.

What the heck I'll weigh in here. Like most FF fans VII is my all-time favorite and "the best of the best". But VIII is right up there in a close second. The OP gave some pretty good reasons why it's a great game though I wouldn't say it had the "best" characters etc. I liked the battle system and especially the GF summons. The magic was very well done and fluid and getting off wicked combos was relatively easy.

That said there are a few other gems in the series. The original FF will always have a place in my heart as one of the best- it was the one that started it all, after all. Simple but interesting story, a time-warp sort of ending(they do that a lot it seems) and great gameplay.

I'm also fond of X-II and XIII. Never played more than an hourvor so of X but it seemed good. Enjoyed the heck out of X-II though. The all-girl team was refreshingly different and fun, and the battle system with the "dress" skill-set was interesting and unique. XIII is a bit less free-form than earlier games in world-exploration, but otherwise I liked it. Lightening is easily my favorite character from that one. But to be fair, almost ALL of the FF games have had memorable characters, whether hero or villain. Kefka comes to mind, as well as Garland/Chaos from the original, and Edea/Ultimitia, Sephiroth(of course!!) and one of my personal favorites from ANY FF games was Zell. And yes Selphie was up there too. And Yuffie. Gotta give props to the ninja-thief chick! I haven't played much of 2-6 even though I have all of them in compilation sets but most of those didn't hold my interest as much as later installations. IX was great too, being set in Ivalice like my other all-time favorite, FF Tactics. THAT game was such an underrated gem in the franchise!!

Yeah, nothing good came out of the Enix merger. And they've all but buried Dragon Quest.

X had a neat story but that began the corridor run, FMV crap that pervaded X, X-2, XIII and probably XV.

VIII only squeaked by on PS2 because it was in production mid-merger. Everything since has either been handheld or Japan only. They have intentionally suffocated the brand. "Final Fantasy" is their main line for "main" RPGs... anything else is either experimental or to throwaway markets.

For shame.
