Not as infuriating as much in the first season... but definitely they're just doubling down on all the stupidities there while slightly relaxing others.

They've put up the first episode of season 2 for free on Youtube for anyone that's looking for some Discuckery.

Saw episode 3. What a mess. It's literally an episode about nothing... just people talking about Spock Spock Spock, and some shoved-in stuff serving as a Section 31 backdoor pilot.

Very backdoor.

Isn't the whole series just an attempt to ease people in on the idea of making a TOS season 4 with new actors?

How was the Section 31 stuff?

Oh god no. It's about easing people into back into their stupid edgy, grimdark explosions Trek by throwing little nuggets of continuity here and there. "Look, a Klingon D7 ship!" "Look, we're talking about Spock! We're still talking about Spock! Let's talk a little more about Spock!"

Awful, awful.

Completely ham-fisted and out of nowhere. And apparently the Empress lady from the Mirror Universe has been elevated to command her own Section 31 ship now?

I know he's already played a character in the in the MCU (who even watched Inhumans though) but based on his performance as Captain Pike Anson Mount would be a great Reed Richards when Marvel gets round to making a Fantastic Four movie.

As for Disovery itself I'm quite liking the prevailing fan theory that the red angels are the Preservers. There was a Preserver Obelisk in Season 1 so the writers are aware of them.

So there's one minorly cool thing going on in Discovery this season. Remember the episode "The Paradise Syndrome" from TOS, with the planet with the alien obelisk where a race transplanted a bunch of Native Americans from Earth there? A race called "The Preservers"? We see the same obelisk in Discovery, and episode 2 showed a planet in Beta Quadrant where pre-WW3 humans were whisked away by an unknown alien known as "The Red Angel."

It seems like we're about to see the Preservers for the first time, and the Red Angel is one of them.

Now of course, this seems dodgy, as this is before TOS and the Enterprise didn't have any data on the Preservers in that episode. So clearly they don't learn anything substantial.

On the one hand, that's a cool thing to go back to. On the other hand, I never cared about that particular TOS episode. But the concept of the Preservers is pretty good, so this could be good.

I remember reading the William Shatner novels, and I know they dealt with the Preservers, but for the life of me, I don't remember anything about them from his books.

No it didn't. Just that Section 31 already had them. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

So about this "everything has to look 25% different" thing, how is it measured? Allegedly anything in STD has to look at least "25% different" from the TOS designs, which is allegedly why the Enterprise looks different in STD than it does in TOS. I would have assumed it was because the TOS design was a little too vintage but what do I know.

The question is how do they measure 25%? Does the shirts of the redshirts need to be 25% off on the red color spectrum? Does the Vulcan ear props need to be 25% longer? Does the nacelles on the Enterprise need to be shifted an extra 90 degrees?

Or is 25% just a really dumb way of trying to sound more formal and less vague than saying "Just make sure it's noticably different at first glance".

So apparently Talos IV and the Talosians will be revisited next episode. Also... it looks like the Talosians have been altered to make sure there is better representation:

I don't really mind this redesign except... the Talosians seem like a race with a pretty solid design to begin with. It's like STD just has to mark its own unique bit of taint to anything it touches/revisits.

25% Different.

Oh, I'm guessing it gets at least five seasons. CBS is clearly all in on this and cancelling it too soon would be admitting failure. And they can't have that.

Saw the Talosian episode. Probably the best episode so far, either season. A real love letter to "The Cage." I enjoyed seeing the relatively faithful recreation of Talos IV (though I'm pretty sure that quarry used was the exact same one in that Black Mirror episode with the starship!) and it was fun seeing Vina again, and how that still weighs on Pike.

Not digging the Section 31 stuff. Now they're literally out in the open, ordering Starfleet Admirals around and threatening starship captains with disciplinary action? They're not even supposed to be part of Starfleet! wtf, people... what part of no one is supposed to know they exist did TPTB forget about?

Oh, also, about the 25% different thing... if that's really true, how was STD able to include actual footage from "The Cage" within this episode? Like, actual footage. Of the classic Enterprise, Nimoy Spock, everything.

Also...

Spoiler:
The episode reveals that this is NOT the Prime Timeline. Michael Burnham was supposed to die as a little girl but the time-travelling Red Angel informed Spock on how and when to save her life... so she grew into who she is now when in the actual Prime Timeline, she would have died at like age 10.

That's a pretty impressive reveal.

Also makes me mad. Phillipa Georgiou would still be alive if not for that pesky Red Angel and the meddling Spock.
