A notary's son and younger brother of Masaccio, Giovanni di Ser Giovanni Guidi was once a mercenary soldier. In 1421 he was working in a International style painter's workshop in Florence and probably also collaborating closely with Masaccio's workshop. By his 1430 enrollment in the Guild of Saint Luke, he was called "Scheggia," meaning splinter, a Tuscan nickname given to individuals of slight stature or to someone who is associated with wood. Between 1436 and 1440, he collaborated on the intarsia, or wood-mosaic, designs for cupboards in Florence Cathedral's new sacristy. He joined the painters' guild in 1433.

Everyone references "Stick" from Daredevil as the inspiration behind Splinter's name, but then I came across a comment somewhere linking the Renaissance artist's nickname to him, which makes more sense given that the Turtles are also named after Renaissance artists.

I think that's a coincidence, but a really cool one. Maybe a future incarnation could incorporate that with Sheggia/Splinter being Yoshi's nickname due to his fascination with Renaissance artists.

In modern day Italy you call someone a "scheggia" when he is very fast in doing something. I've never heard this term associated to the stature of a person.

Thats pretty cool, but Splinter was named after "Stick" from Daredevil just as "The Foot" was named after the "Hand" from daredevil. Eastman and Laird were heavily influenced by Frank Miller's Daredevil and did many homages for him

I personally think it was more Kevin being influenced by Frank Miller and Peter sort of humoring him, but that's just my feeling. Peter doesn't strike me as a Frank Miller sort of guy at all.
