The art was a step up from the annual, I think the coloring really made it pop. But the story really felt like it dragged on, I found myself wanting to skip past pages just to get past all the jib jab. It was no longer fun to guess who the mystery man was (Which was obvious from the start.) but instead became annoying, but the ending did give a nice enough shock!

Good issue, good art...a little bit if a waste of a good character design but I don't really mind.

Hmm... maybe at some point he'll develop a split personality and start going on romps as his demented alter-ego?

This issue kinda reminded me of the old Fred Wolf series episode
Spoiler:
"Sword of Yurikawa."

That would be interesting. I'm curious where the disguise came from. I don't remember Yoshi wearing it in the flashbacks.

I really enjoyed this issue. Story, art, and all. Now when can I get the next issue?

Definitely going to scoop up this issue. Most definitely going to ask Mr Eastman to autograph this one and my Mirage Raph... then they will be shut out from the light of day for 50 years until I'm an old man. Hopefully I use the money for one last huzzah before I eat dirt.

so, so issue, no major complaints except for the fact that this seems like it could be a "back story" tagged to the end of an issue, but
Spoiler:
the ending did make it worth the buy

I guess they were banking on Eastman's art to carry this issue. Can't wait for what's next though.

Stop roleplaying, you buffoon. Or at LEAST be consistent. You're now both the Nick and IDW Shredder alike? GTFO.

Gotta love how villains go around being all "I am ME!" like that is convincing enough of their evil potential. Come on Shredder, do something terrifying!

Kevin Eastman's art is always a treat and seeing Pattison's colors applied was a wonderful bonus.

But the story... hrm. The big reveal was plainly telegraphed from the start and the issue-long fight was repetitive to the brink of tedium. I get the message of the issue and it certainly feels like we're at the boiling point of the "City Fall" arc, but the execution was sort of... boring.

Sorry to be a Negative Nancy on this one. Enjoyed the art and the colors and the jist of it all, just not so much the story.
I'm going to more or less echo these sentiments. The last five or so pages were more entertaining than the bulk of the issue to me, as the Turtles' A-plot consisted of three nearly identical fight scenes in three different locations. The idea that Splinter, who has the knowledge and memories of a feudal-era Japanese man, can turn on the character he presents in the issue also strains believably a little.

Overall, it reads like decent but slightly tedious filler until the scene with the Foot.

Art-wise, Kevin's work in color is a treat, although there were times where it was hard to tell what was going on either because of panel-size or the coloring and art just not meshing (it took me a while to make out what was happening when disguised Splinter kicks open the church door, for example). For the most part, though, it works, and it's cool to see Rhonda actually deviated from her usual technique to better accompany Kevin.

Okay, the more I think about it, the more I am convincing myself that IDW has been slowly sowing the seeds of a darker more aggressive side to

personality that he may be struggling to repress...

My thoughts:

I really enjoyed #21. I liked that it was a (mostly) standalone story, which we really haven't gotten yet in the main IDW run (not counting the micros and the Annual). Also, Eastman's art looked awesome in color.

For me it was an OK issue. I enjoyed Eastman's art for the most part, but I feel that fight scenes is not something he particularly excels at. The fact that there was an average of 10 panels per page, and that most of them were close ups, didn't help either. Moreover, I think that the payoff of the fight came across as weak since we all knew who was under that mask. Maybe if it had ended up being someone else, it would have been much better since they would have caught us completely off guard. I also didn't like all the trash talk that Splinter laid on the turtles; that attitude just doesn't fit his character.

Overall I get the point they were trying to portray but maybe another approach would have had a better payoff. Also, I thought that this story idea was the one that was gonna be used in the next annual, so now I'm kind of intrigued by what they are gonna do with that one. Maybe this issue will tie into it?

Anyway, all things considered, this was a nice little set up for the city fall arc that's coming up. Now all that's left to do is wait for it (:

Man, gotta say, one thing I took away from that issue is that Eastman still draws Karai exactly the same, I mean dang, other then what she was wearing it was like looking at an issue of the Mirage comic.

I enjoyed it. Nothing groundbreaking, sure, but the fact that the "reveal" was not all that surprising, or that it "retreads" something the Nick online comics did (which the majority outside of hardcore fans probably haven't read) doesn't diminish my enjoyment from it. It's still a cool little TMNT story about Splinter challenging his sons in a neat character design. Does that whole mask basically just sit on his nose, though? That was weird...

It's actually kind of what he's known for.

I guess it depends on the type of voice that we hear when we read masked Splinter's lines. I think he could pull off trash talking but it's sort of funny to me because Im not used to that from him.

I thought it was a great way to remind the boys that they think they know everything, when the truth is, their skills are limited and restrictive and it's time they expand beyond what they're comfortable with. I read that Eastman had limited knowledge of martial arts when he first created the turtles and over the years his interest in and knowledge of various martial arts around the world has grown. He wanted to bring it to the guys in a way to shake them up a little and I found it effective.

Love his boxy style of art for the guys. I much prefer his depiction of Karai to others. I swear I just love this comic so much, I'm really so happy to see it being revived so well and with such care and consideration. Also, I may be in the minority here, but I would absolutely love to see some complicated romantic entanglements as well.
(Please don't go on about how wrong inter-species blah blah blah, if anyone is enjoying SAGA and other immensely well-written sci-fi it's a common theme and if done correctly can be very interesting for character development and enrichment.)
