Dwayne Johnson’s DC Villain Black Adam to Get His Own Spinoff

After announcing plans to make a “Shazam” movie with Dwayne Johnson attached to play the antagonist Black Adam, New Line Cinema and DC Entertainment have now decided to expand the property with a second film.

New Line first announced the project in the fall of 2014 with Johnson on board to star and Darren Lemke set to pen the script. After a successful meeting with Johnson, the studio has decided to add a spinoff film to the universe that will focus on Johnson’s character.

I guess that's not the worst thing ever. Though Man of Steel 2 really ought to have an actual Superman villain in it. i.e., Brainiac or something. Black Adam isn't going to be terribly different from General Zod.

The thinking is probably, "let's use Man of Steel 2 to springboard the Black Adam movie, and the Shazam movie later on, and make the Rock really happy," and not on "Let's make a really great Man of Steel sequel." Which is a shame.

WTF? How can WB recklessly announce a Black Adam spin-off movie while at the same time "not feel confident in the first drafts" of the Shazam script? Absolutely contemptible.

The Rock probably has his contract signed for X number of movies as Black Adam, and WB is so desperate to not lose him to Marvel that they're putting him in Man of Steel 2. Which isn't that bad, but as Cylon said... so much untapped mythos you could be using instead. But considering the Lex Luthor we've got, I'm not even sure I'd want to see what their take on any of the above would be.

Kinda funny that this rumor breaks on the same day as a great Marvel trailer drops... you really get a sense of how things are going for the respective studios.

Like Andrew said... WB appears to be much more concerned with keeping Dwayne Johnson on retainer than making a good Superman sequel.

Which is infuriating. Just put Johnson in a mocap role for Man of Steel 2 (Parasite or Metallo, perhaps?) and promise him that IF Warner Bros can pull off a Shazam movie, he absolutely gets to still costar in it as Black Adam.

But no. That makes too much sense. Let's have Black Adam v Superman: Dawn of Poor Planning!

I see Dawn of Justice as Man of Steel 2. As far as a second solo outing for Superman, what about Dwayne as Metallo who is working with Brainaic? Would Johnson go for something like that?

This movie was never a good idea, especially when it became part of the DCEU, and yes they're putting Black Adam in MoS2 not just to keep the rock but to make the Superman movie viable with some star power.

How did DC lose the rights of having the name Captain Marvel? That's so stupid, Captain Marvel was not even an important character in Marvel and yet the Captain Marvel movie is now unrelated to the Captain Marvel we all know. Shazaam is such a stupid name for the hero though I guess it makes sense since the comics had been called that for rights issues but still a weak name change.

I'm sure it's twofold... but there does appear to be an inherent lack of trust from WB in a Superman movie flying entirely on its own merits.

It doesn't even make sense. Shazam is the old man wizard who gives Captain Marvel his powers. Making (merging?) Captain Marvel into Shazam was a thing the New52 did, and dumb.
