So what was the deal with the Ninja Rats?
So during the space arc, the Turtles and the Fugitoid are forced into the sewers, then out of nowhere this happens:
Obviously it's just for a gag, we're not meant to think too much about it... ... But... What's up with this? Are they also mutants in hiding or do they have a completely different backstory? What are the odds of this happening? Is it a coincidence or does the laws of the universe demand something like this must exist? How many similar beings exists across the universe? |

This is all that was shown on the show itself. However if you ever play the video game TMNT 2: Battle Nexus (GameCube/PlayStation 2/X Box versions), several segments show more details about who the rats are and what they do.

Lol, I doubt the writers put any more thought into this aside from it being a joke about reversing the roles of the TMNT with rat ninjas.
Obviously, they're just counterparts, except it's four rats and a turtle that mutated. The rat that said "Cowabunga" is also clearly Mikey's alternate counterpart for that universe. |
