II and III actually work great... as kids' movies. They're pretty crummy as "real" movies, and they're terrible as sequels to the original, but as self-contained kids' movies, or "live-action kinda/almost-versions of the cartoon" they're actually pretty good. Although III is kind of meandering and boring compared to how bombastic II was, but I'd argue it had a better basic plot. That is to say, the idea of the time-travel storyline of III was quite interesting, although the execution of the final movie as a whole was rather poor.
There's a ton wrong with both, definitely. Neither one is on my playlist until I'm doing a movie marathon run. BUT strictly as kids' movies they're well above average. The new movie just didn't know what it was trying to do, who it was trying to please, and figured the name and the characters would be enough to satisfy. Then, when people went, "Boy, that was a dumb movie", they said, "Oh, well, y'know, it's for kids," even though it's so not, in a ton of ways that have already been stated and re-stated. As a "real" movie? None of them would be my first choice. I'm pretty set with the first one. But at least both II and III legitimately worked as kids movies. The new one's not really appropriate for them, and it just in no way feels like a kids' movie, so the "kids were the audience" argument falls kind of flat when some people justify the flaws of it that way. I can sit through II and III and not break anything, put it that way. They're bad, but watching them isn't frustrating.

Maybe Leo, I and the haters from gen x/gen y are just too long in the tooth, and perhaps our view that corporate America is the enemy is, at heart, the dividing line. It might actually be a generational thing. We fought the corporate agenda of our youth, while millennials embraced it, and vie hard to become it. Becoming a startup in the late 90's wasn't really a thing. Being an entrepreneur was cool, as long as it wasn't about selling out. The goal was to make cool stuff, not make money with stupid ****. The tables have bloody turned. As Bill Maher pointed out the other day, Apple has just launched a new service that allows anyone to have access to music curated into playlists for the low cost of 10$ a month, or on demand songs of your choosing. Said another way, you can pay money to listen to the Radio. Dafuq? Thanks Millennials. Good ****ing work. I guess that's the big difference. We joined the rebels, while y'all are eager to sign up with the empire and donate to the cause. Two sides of a coin I suppose. Thankfully, trends oscillate. It's only a matter of time. |

Commenter42, you're saying it's an age/generation thing...? I'm 30. I don't imagine you & Leo are that much older. But really... what's that got to do with anything? (also you have to give us specifics on how you personally fought the corporation, that sounds amazing). I could make a big observation about those on this board who like the new movie and those who don't, but it's a point of view that could be deemed insulting, so I won't. Big grand assumptions on other peoples mindsets are redundant & only serve to big yourself up. And c'mon, man... no-one can try convince me that the new movies are about money and past incarnations weren't
"you're simply not looking at it from the same point of view." Zactly. Truest thing you've said. We're all different with different points of view. Aint nuttin' wrong wid dat

It's never been a question about whether or not something is done for profit. Yes, of course, all commercial films are made for the purpose of making money and potentially more films and thus potentially more money. It's about a certain level of care and genuine respect for the material that was always evident in the older films - even at dumber moments - but not so much in the newest one.
The older films didn't feel like there were guys just off-screen in suits clinking champagne glasses and smoking Cubans and shaking bags of money every time something "big" happened. All movies are made for money, yes. This one felt just plain dirty. Especially when you've got none other than Kevin Eastman of all people, sitting on Bay's lap going "Meep Meep Meep." Meanwhile, we ALL see Bay's lips moving, and everyone KNOWS it's not really Kevin saying these things, but rather, an elaborate illusion. Or, at least, you hope it is, once it turns out nothing the guy said about the movie was true, anyway. So yeah, you can make a movie and make money on it without being all Joel F'n Schumacher about it.

lol, a spoon full of sugar dude...that's what it's all about. I have a life, outside of the boards, no different than you, but unlike the new generation, I enjoy my anonymity. it's one of the few freedoms left, in an age of 0 privacy. that said, let's table the "oh yeah how did you ever fight the corporation" or other such nonsense. It's a mindset, that, as I am older than you, I grew up with, and clearly you didn't, or you'd immediately understand to what I was referring, in the way Leo did. In my day (there you got me playing the old fart now), brand labels were insulting. If you went to school sporting a label, you were mocked. Simple. You didn't compete with friends to prove brand loyalty, or constantly remind people how you follow this or that person. Being referred to as a follower was an insult! You must remember some of this, or perhaps there are too many years between us. And yes, I am of the mindset that the quality of a thing dictates it's worth. I am of the mindset that you can rationally look at a product and divine it's quality. That's actually how commerce works. Sorry if that sounds patronizing, but damn if it doesn't bear repeating. The question really is "What are the Turtles to you?" What does the brand represent? For me, as I've said endless times, it isn't FW or 2003. FW was just silly from the 2nd season onward ( though a few lines here and there are pretty funny if you listen for them) and I could never get into the art style associated with 2003. I know many people feel it's the best of the best, but I digress. The 90's movie, Mirage, and Nick are closest to what it should be. TMNT should have an edge. It should be social commentary, and drama, with meaningful action. It's a very rich world, a world in which the turtles might not always win, or do the right thing. They should be morally grey. They should bear the consequences of their actions. They navigate the world as outsiders; young, sentient animals trying to make sense of an all too human world. Lot's of people have pointed to Daredevil on Netflix. I think the tone of that series is right for TMNT, not the schlock we got from Bay. Penny Dreadful (the show) could also be used as an example, as it has some of the most intriguing writing on TV. Game of Thrones, Orange is the new Black, The new Mad Max Film - all examples of taking an idea, and executing it flawlessly. I don't see TMNT as The Avengers or Batman V Superman fare. It's in many ways a bigger idea. I don't understand why you can't see that, and keep insisting on a dumbed down-turn your brain of film. You have countless films that don't challenge you to root through if the urge strikes. No need to toss TMNT into that pile once again. Harry Partridge animated a send up of Watchmen had it been watered down for kids, which I'm sure gave Moore a stroke: Imagine if this is what became of Watchmen? One of the greatest comic book stories ever? TMNT deserves it's due man. Just admit it. Quote:

SOTO is a fautly movie, but it's honestly a kids movie due to the complaints of the soccer moms. Plus, it's a fun movie. TMNT 2014 is just straight up bad. At least SOTO gave the Turtles personalities and screentime.

I never said it didn't the frustrating thing about enjoying the new movie (on this board at least, it's like a whole other world, I don't get grief for it in my personal life) is the appearance it gives you. It makes you look as though you're a cheerleader for dumb action movies. No. Obviously I'd love the films to be under a better company which would produce better films (a Mad Max-like TMNT??? Drool) but this is the state of play at the moment. Platinum Dunes are in control, which aren't the dream people you want pulling the strings but 1991/1993/2007 are all dumb movies, IMO. I can handle a couple more. I love all five Turtles movies, flaws & all and even if I didn't, I wouldn't come here everyday and complain cause I'm not that kind of person. Honestly, if you are much older than 30 and doing that about Ninja Turtles... actually I don't wanna insult you. Frankly at times I think you're smarter than all of us put together. I'm just saying we aren't stopping or changing sh*t on this board. No-one from Paramount is coming here for feedback & if they did they'd get bored scanning through all the fights, speeches and gifs.
The films could be better. They're not. How you react to that is how you react.
