Do you still call them, "DVDs" even if they're not?

I just realized I still do this. I only buy blu-ray's now, I almost never buy a DVD unless there's no other alternative (usually cartoons are still only released on DVD), but I never call them "blu-ray's."

Like I don't say, "Oh I have to buy this new movie or show on blu-ray when it comes out." I still say, "I'll have to get the DVD," even if I don't buy DVDs, I always buy the blu-rays.

It's really weird because nobody says VHS tapes anymore, but I still call them "DVDs" regularly. Does anyone else do this?

I remember older people calling CDs "tapes", and yeah I've heard people call BRs "DVDs", I might've done it as well, not because I don't know the difference but I think the average person understands DVD perfectly while BR not so much.

Blu-Ray was never able to replace DVDs and streaming took over as the next standard so for many BR isn't even a thing. Sony really invested a lot on Blu-Ray thinking it'd be the next standard but boy did it fail. in b4 "but brs are selling!!!11" That's not the point, they were meant to be the next DVD and they weren't.

I still call everything "video," because it's accurate.

No, I say I have it on Blu-ray since that's what it is.

I still call them DVD's.
I mean, are they not digital versatile discs?

No I don't. I call them blu-rays and I keep them in a bookcase with my Nintendo tapes.

I've never called a Blu-Ray a "DVD", but I go use the general term video.

I have sometimes referred my 3DS as a Gameboy, though.

I still call portable phones, "cell phones" too, although I know that's not what people call them these days.

I also don't say, "HD flat-screen TV" and I still refer to it as a "TV set" like those old 80's/90's TV's with the fat casings.

I was going to say this is a silly thread, but I think CC has a point. Pr example, in my country, lots of people use "PlayStation" as a synonym for "video game console", implying Sony consoles are the only ones that matter/exist, due to their sheer popularity in this country. Just like in the 90s "Mega Drive"(aka Genesis) was a synonym for "video game console" as well.

But no, I've never heard someone calling a Blu-Ray a "DVD". And I certainly never done that either.

I still call them videos, no matter what format I have them on. Always have and probably always will.

I also say that I "taped" something even if it's on DVR (I still own and use a VCR to record some things).

Maybe I'm weird for doing it but hey, I also live in the region (and I myself do it) where all colas are called Coke no matter what brand or flavor they are. Seems to upset a lot of people for some reason but I'm not planning on changing way I talk anytime soon to please the super-sensitive.

In the general public I never hear people say "I'm going to buy the blu-ray" when they want a new movie, even when they do buy it on blu-ray. They usually say "I'll get it when it comes out on DVD" or "I'll see it online."

In fact I never see the word "blu-ray" said in public outside of stores like Best Buy or whatever.

I usually just say 'I'll get it when it's out' or 'when it's in stores'. If I have to call it something I usually say video or DVD.

And yeah, BluRay never replaced DVD the way DVD replaced VHS tapes. To this day, every modern release will still have a DVD release, a BluRay release, and a DVD/BluRay combo. And there are still series made only on DVD and never BluRay.

This is kinda what I mean. A lot of cartoons these days also only ever get DVD releases, in fact I can only think of a small handful of cartoons that get blu-ray releases. Likewise since online streaming/downloads came out so quickly after blu-ray's, a lot of people stopped collecting discs altogether and just watched things online.
