What made you happy today?

So, a little over a year ago lightning hit and destroyed the old barn beside my grandparent's former home; both date back to the 1870s so that was pretty sad. (The house was fine, but even with a little distance between the heat melted it's modern plastic siding on the nearest side/corner.)

Pretty much the only thing that remained ok were the old doors on the front of the barn. (Note, it's a smallish barn originally housing horse and buggy, and then cars through different decades of modernization.)

My mother has remained somewhat in touch with the family who bought it in 2001 after we had to sell after my grandmother passed. (Can't believe it's been theirs for 14 years already.)

After the barn burned, they did not get rid of the doors. My mom had told the guy last year, when she stopped in after the fire, it that if they decide to get rid of them to let us know. He's a creative landscaper sort and it's a decent sized piece of property so it was possible they might work it in somehow or use it in the new barn/garage they'd put up. And we're glad that this is a family who appreciates the place similarly to how we did.

But we've now been told that if we want them we can come up sometime and get them, so we'll probably do that tomorrow. Just a couple old 140+ year old barn doors, but it will be cool to have them with so much history attached to them.


Note to self... remember to go say hello to an "old friend" (who happens to be a big old hallow, but living, tree) out in the 'field' behind the house. Back before it sold I'd left a note in a drawer to the next owners asking them to watch over it and why it was sorta special.

Today my girlfriend and my family threw me a SURPRISE TMNT - themed 30th Birthday Party at my aunt's cottage!! It was the best thing ever, and an awesome way for me to start my 30's. We posed for a picture outside. And yes, those are TMNT sunglasses we're all wearing

I got married on Saturday and I'm still feeling pretty good about it. My groomsmen consisted entirely of people I met here and it was amazing.

Happy-maker- speaking of shoes (from the gear-grinder thread).... Was at Wal-Mart yesterday (otherwise known as the black hole that takes all my money, lol) and found a pair of TMNT soft fuzzy slippers with the plush lining inside and nubby grippers on the bottom, and they were even in my size! Granted, these were in the boys clothing section, but since I get about half my clothes there anyway, I didn't care. So- feet feeling comfy in new slipper, and I found some cool decorations for Samhain, as well as four "new" TMNT figs I've been wanting. (Leatherhead and Baxter and the Nick Mikey and Donnie, mostly for their better articulation for posing.)

I also found the things I will need to complete a TMNT-themed costume for Samhain if they let us dress up at work, or while I hand out candy if I can manage to get it off. The decorations were a skull to go with the cat skeleton I got a couple of weeks ago, and a big crow and a huge hairy spider that will go on the bush outside my apartment. Thinking of covering the bush in webs and tangling the cat up in it for effect, which will have the added advantage of wigging out my annoying and overly-scaredy-cat neighbor and perhaps keep her from coming down so much, LOL!

What's making me happy today: That Mom's making a roast. I love those.

Clearing out a side room off the attic for some upcoming home improvement stuff, packing up a lot of old toys and other stuff that's been stored in there a long time... my sister came across one of the old Burger King Halloween Silly Slammers toys from 1999. If you hit them or throw them they make noise. As hot as that room and attic get every summer, and cold in the winter, the 16-year-old battery in the thing still works. I put it aside to toss in with some of my Halloween stuff.

It was Batty that was found (example below). There's also an eyeball, ghost (think we also have both of those somewhere), witch, and pumpkin. They just don't do kid's meal toys like they used to.

I haven't been on in a while, been too busy fulfilling my duties from my promotion to Manager of the video game store I work at. Made me very happy to get promoted... I'm just exhausted from training my 3 new people. All the training is starting to pay off though. They can be trusted on their own for the most part now... I miss getting on here. Hopefully I'll be able to get back on here more now... Good to see so many other members having happy times as well!
