Custom Giant Cyber Samurai Turtle comission

I'm currently working on a great comission project called: Giant Cyber Samurai Turtle prototype! This thread to keep everybody who is interested (and the great kaptainmyke in particular) informed about my progression. Here are my first sketches of the body armour.

I would like to find out who the forum member is here who has that playmates prototype chest piece. Are you going to make the turtle laser guns swivel like they do on the sides of the knees and shoulders? I also wonder (from the artist's rendering in the catalog) if the stomach area has a horizontal strobe light like KITT from Knight Rider.

The strobe would be quite impossible I think. Ik could try to make some sort of light though. I hope I can make the swivel guns but it depends on what existing scrap robot parts I can find for this custom. I probably can't make an exact 1:1 rendering of the prototype picture but more more something that resembles it close.

That design looks like it was done in-house at Playmates (or by the design firm they worked with in California - I can't remember what they were called now), so Peter and Kevin probably only saw the control drawings for it that would have been faxed to Mirage. They must have approved them, since it looks like it was in listed a catalog and a prototype went into production. Sometimes Peter surprises me with what he knows/remembers, so maybe he'll have some knowledge about it.

Cheers,
Dan Berger
Mirage Studios
The plot thickens.

Catalogue art was often different from the sculpted prototypes and final products. Many catalogue drawings were done by Michael Dooney.

We are almost ready to unveil the final prototype of this figure, packaged with box art, too. There have been a few bumps along the way.

Yes, I have an update. He was finished but did not survive the Netherlands - USA trip very well. The gold paint had rubbed all over the box and he was damaged becouse the twisy ties had snapped off. So he had to make the trip pack to my workshop. Back to the drawing board becouse of the trouble with the gold paint. Tried a lot of things. Chrome gold paint (very nice but did not stick right). First a silver paint and then a thin yellow layer. But did not like how that turned out after the clear finishing coat. Now I have used a little less shiny gold paint over a silver coat that does not rub off that much. It also still looks nice after the clear coat. I'll finish the Samurai in about two weeks. I give Kaptainmyke the honor to show him off when ready.

Gold and silver can be a real bitch when it comes to paint rub. I hope it turns out well and I can't wait to see the finished work.

Try, try again! We'll get it right. The moon base wasn't constructed in a day.
