Volcano erupts in Guatemala and kills at least 62 people

Soldiers are helping firefighters search for missing people after Sunday's horrific volcanic eruption in Guatemala, when torrents of superheated rock, ash and mud destroyed villages.

The official death toll from the destruction at the Fuego volcano has risen to 62, the authorities say.

Thousands of people are being housed in temporary shelters.

Volcanologists report the eruption, which sent ash up to 10km (33,000ft) into the sky, is now over.

The eruption also generated pyroclastic flows - fast-moving mixtures of very hot gas and volcanic matter - descending down the slopes, engulfing communities such as El Rodeo and San Miguel Los Lotes.

Unfortunately, people who live in poverty tends to build their house on unsafe terrain. They will have to relocate and nothing will ever build in that area again. The zone will be declared a cementery.

So sad and in Hawaii is in the same situation with a volcano eruption. Both volcanoes are still very active.

It's a dicegame. It just went bigtime blooie 5 years ago... will it go blooie again in the next 20, 30 years? Let's roll the dice. It's a calculated gamble. And it's sad to see what happens, but it shouldn't be entirely unexpected by anyone involved.

I say this as a person with a house about 15 miles from Mt. Rainier, primed to blow any time now. Any year.
