Sony Pictures Entertainment Brings Marvel Studios Into The Amazing World Of Spider-Ma

Marvel's Kevin Feige to Produce Next Installment of the Spider-Man Franchise with Amy Pascal

(Culver City, California, and Burbank, California February 09, 2015) – Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios announced today that Sony is bringing Marvel into the amazing world of Spider-Man.

Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.

Marvel and Sony Pictures are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films.

The new relationship follows a decade of speculation among fans about whether Spider-Man – who has always been an integral and important part of the larger Marvel Universe in the comic books – could become part of the Marvel Universe on the big screen. Spider-Man has more than 50 years of history in Marvel's world, and with this deal, fans will be able to experience Spider-Man taking his rightful place among other Super Heroes in the MCU.

Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company said: "Spider-Man is one of Marvel's great characters, beloved around the world. We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building."

"We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. "This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans."

"Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker's story into the future," added Doug Belgrad, president, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.

"I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie," said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. "Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel's involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years."

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

So, is this a reboot of a reboot?

Or is Garfield coming back?

Considering Garfield was essentially fired, it's a reboot. Unless they decide to rehire Garfield for the 2017 spidey film.

I wouldn't mind seeing them keep Garfield and scrap everything else. But, he had to go and publicly call ASM 2 a piece of crap, so I can see why they'd get rid of him. "How DARE you agree with literally everyone! We'll show you, buddy!"

Sick of seeing the origin at this point, so I really hope from now on the movies just have the stories "Joined In Progress."

This deal sounds slanted in favor of Sony, though. Seems like Marvel just gets to "borrow" him once in a while for their movies. If Sony really does still have "final say" over scripts and such, there's really nothing to celebrate, since Sony being run by morons is what killed the Spidey films in the first place. So, I'm curious, and optimistic, but I'll wait before I get too excited. Just sounds like Marvel really, really wanted Spidey to be in "Civil War", and that's all this is, is a way to make that happen. If everything else stays more or less the same, then that's still not really a big deal.

I'unno, we'll see.

Well, I'm cautiously optimistic, myself. (Then again, I said that before TMNT14 came out, too....) I didn't care for Garfield. (Sorry, I just DON'T like him.) If they can find someone who actually has more to offer than a "pretty-boy Peter" and some snark, I'm all for it.

At least he knew HOW. Don't think Garfiled has that much emotion in his whole body. I just didn't FEEL anything from him. But OH once the costume was on, the snark was off the charts!

They need to have a Peter Parker whose already a few years into his Spiderman career. God forbid we have to sit through the same boring Green Goblin story for the millionth time.

Well, to be fair, his first encounter with Gobby wasn't even until after issue #12(I don't remember the exact #, but I know it was past that)! By that reckoning, Ock and Electro should have BOTH come before Gobby! Who wants to see Chameleon in the next movie??!! Heck, he should've already met the FF before meeting GG. Which- kind of makes sense, alphabetically..... We can start at the top- Arcade, Black Cat, Chameleon, Cloak & Dagger, Doc Ock, Electro, Green Goblin, Hammerhead or Hobgoblin, (lost on I), Jackal, Kaine or Kraven, Lizard, Madame Web, Man-Wolf or Molten Man, (dunno on N or O), Prowler or Punisher,.....

Edit: Gobby's first appearance was ASM #14.

Oh my God. Thank you! I try t o tell Tobey fans this and they are all like "He didn't cry in every movie". I don't think these people saw the movies we did. Plus all three were the same damn movie with different bad guys. Honest movie trailers hit it on the head.

Yet nearly everything in the first two Spider-Man movies was FAR better than the first two Amazing Spider-Man movies- the fights, the acting (say what you will about Toby, but everyone else was spot-on), the stories (Ock's plot was particularly good), and the effects. Most people seem to simply razz on them because #3 left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. And that's mostly because of disappointment over Venom and Harry-Goblin. Do I even need to bring up Lizard or Electro?! Poor choices made on both. And as much as I feel a bit face-palm-y at Toby in #3, Garfield is just too "pretty" (and was already a bit confrontational even BEFORE the spider, which is SOO OOC for that point in the movie) to be a convincing nerd. Sally Fields made a good aunt May though, surprisingly.

Also- Willem Dafoe really SOLD GG. Having read through most of Gobby's history (Which includes once having abducted Flash and gotten him totally sloshed on whiskey before putting him behind the wheel of a semi rig and watching him crash it into the school Peter was teaching at- as a poke at Peter, of course. Also, banging Gwen Stacy while his son was unconscious after a drug overdose- and swiping her twin children from the "affair" to raise in secret in France) he was so convincing as Psycho-borne, er, Osborne that anyone else would just seem dull in comparison.

Spidey's back! And he's going to appear in Civil War first, so he's going to be an already established hero in the MCU (like Black Panther), so no origin story. Can't wait for phase 3 now.
