Talking So Kat Graham shared my April drawing in her IG story...

... highlighting "Choices matter". The little girl cosplayed April so adorably.
This made my day.

That is all. Have a nice day to you.

Black people will have more choices to dress up if there are more black characters.

Dress up as Storm or Uhura gets boring after a while.

That's nonsense, there's never been any rule stating that "Black People Cannot Dress Up As White Characters". Never. BUT, the opposite in fact is very true.

In my lifetime I've seen countless, COUNTLESS black Supermans, Batmans, Wonder Womans and yes, even April O'Neils, whether it's Halloween or conventions or just plain internet cosplay. They've always been out there and for the most part nobody says they can't. It's fine, people are just having fun.

BUT. On the flip side. White people CANNOT dress up as Mike Tyson, Muhammed Ali, Bill Cosby, etc. etc. And if they do, it raises ALL kinds of problems, from accusations of racism on one end to "cultural misappropriation" on the other end.

Michael Jackson, obviously, has existed in some kind of nebulous gray area since the mid-1980s. But you get my point.

This isn't me stirring sh*t, it's a simple statement of fact. Little black kids who idolize Superman, are allowed to dress up like Superman. BUT, little white kids who idolize Black Panther are NOT allowed to dress up like Black Panther.

So it shows you who the real racists are. Juuuuuust saying.

But all of those black examples are base on real people and where's the fun in that?

I agree everyone should dress whatever fictional character they like.

If anyone has a favorite fictional black character then by all means cosplay your little heart out. And if they didn't get the Bill Cosby reference because they honestly thought you were trying to be 80's Bob Saget then that's their problem.

You're alright, You.

You can't even try and distinguish between Cosby and Sagat by using a bottle of sleeping pills as a prop.

I mean, I have my own ideas how to make the differences clear, BUT, as usual, they're in incredibly poor taste.

You know... I would love to see how some wholesome family sitcom would handle the topic of like a white kid, maybe 9 or 10 or something, that is such a huge Black Panther fan that wants to dress as him.... and how somehow it has to be explained to him that he's a horrible person for wanting to dress up like his favorite hero of all time.

"But I don't like Captain America... I like Black Panther..." cue the sad awwwwwwwwww voice track.

Y'know what was awesome, was when Roddy Piper painted half his body black to fight Bad News Brown, and explained that he was trying to symbolically illustrate that he did NOT want people to look at it as "a white guy fighting a black guy", but that he was representing people of all colors against a guy who was a huge asshole who just HAPPENED to be black. And of course people to this day insist that it's pretty racist, even with the explanation.

Definitely insensitive and rather tone deaf, but racist? Ehhhhhhhhh.

Even better was when the other guys stole his paint remover after the show, and Roddy had to go home on the plane all painted up like that and everything. Good times.

When have you ever heard of a white kid not being allowed to dress up as Black Panther? Who is making these "rules"? As a child seeing something that is similar to you is empowering. Like if your favourite super hero wore glasses, it would make you less self conscious around wearing glasses. I think it really great that this little girl has another character she can see more of herself in. Having more representation of the actual makeup of our world in the media is something that is long over due. It is about having more identifiable choices for her.

Also back to the point of the thread, that is really cool she highlight your drawing @Shark_Blade

There were multiple white kids (and black kids) dressed as Black Panther trick-or-treating in my neighborhood this weekend. No one cared.

My experience as well. A few white kids as Black Panther in the years since that movie came out.

Nobody said anything. Now, if they were grownups, it'd probably be a very different story.

Yeah, kids tend to have a longer leash with these things. Sometimes.

When they're all cute little anklebiters, nobody's gonna say anything. Except for a few Karens, who'll say anything to anyone.
