1. Fox saw an early cut and it sucks. Goal: bury it.

2. Fox saw an early cut, liked it, and threw some more money at it for reshoots.

3.

4. So that Deadpool 2 and New Mutants don't clash in the overseas box office.

Which makes sense. And yet... kinda hard not to suspect #1 or #3...

Hopefully Fox finally realized it was a dumb idea to make a horror movie that just happened to have New Mutants characters in it.

I'm thinking the exact opposite, doing stuff WITH mutants is far more compelling than just having mutants doing stuff.

See also:

Legion and Logan.

Agreed. The way to keep a franchise/trope fresh is to explore it in new contexts...

Western; horror; comedy; etc...

Reason for delay: "It tested well, but not great" and "not scary enough." So reshoots.

I have a hard time believing reshoots will be sufficient to truly increase the horror. Still, though, if it helps differentiate this film as not just another X-Men movie...

The "go to" for that in horror movies is often times to go back and add in trippy nightmare sequences for the characters. In every instance I've seen, it always hurts the movie, not helps.

That's what I was thinking, too. Hallucinations and dream sequences.

So "no costumes" and "hard PG-13."

It's a strange choice. Since "New Mutants" was born in the wake of "Deadpool," a R-rated comedy that made more money than any Singerverse movie ever... they want to turn around and make it a PG-13 horror movie? An X-Men horror movie is already an odd thing, but a PG-13 one? Ehh...

Neither of those things should make me less excited.

Both do.

Still, within his vision, maybe those are the best choices to make.

The reshoots mean the film's original post-credits scene has been tossed out. It would have featured Jon Hamm playing X-Men villain Mr. Sinister. A new post-credit scene is being filmed with Antonio Bandearas as a mystery character

Warpath. Calling it now. Or Thunderbird. We need Dani or Mirage. Or Magick.
