External hard drives causing software crashes.

Has anyone else ever had this problem? It seems like my external hard drive has been seriously malfunctioning for quite a while now, and recently it caused several key parts of windows to crash. At first I thought this was a problem with Windows itself but unplugging the hard drive seems to have solved the problem. I'm going to replace the hard drive but I won't be using my personal computer to transfer the files, I'll probably use a library computer or something.

You could use scandisk or something like that to check the hard disk or use a Linux live distribution to transfer your files.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure, unplugging it was the only thing that seemed to work.
