How old is old?

Like, when you tell someone or someone tells you "You're old." At what age do we agree that it's absolutely true?

65 is the official retirement age in most of the world if I'm not mistaken. I think when you're considered too old to do full time labour, even when you aren't too sick for it, is about as close to an objective measure as we're going to get.

Depends on the person. If you make bad choices that age you then you may be "old" sooner than others your age. While 60s and 70s may be seniors many still do quite well in those decades and aren't yet "old and decrepit." So I went with 80.

I can at least vouch for it certainly not being age 40 though. (And if any of you youngers choose it or below, we're gonna have some words. lol)

When you wish you hadn't woken up the next morning and just drifted off into oblivion?

So, is that 17? 21? We all hit that eventually, far too fvcking soon.

Sh*t, I've seen women who were flat-out "done" in their mid-20s. Depends on how much coke they do.

Bitches love that junk, though, which explains why so many of them age like grapes.

There are lots of ways to judge this.... some are perceptual.
A young kid calls you "old" when you are 40. A hot 24 year old girl at the bar calls you old when you are 32 if she doesn't like you. If she likes you, then you aren't old.

Then there's the life measurement based on whatever you are trying to do. Unfortunately if you are trying to get a job, then you are "old" at about 42 based on hiring judgements. This is nonsense of course, but remember who is judging you in most cases - low paid HR people who are younger and angry at their own work situation.

Or life measurement based on dating goals. If you are 45 without kids and looking to have them, then you are going to have to dig deep or date wayyyyy down on your ladder because of that judgment heuristic based on age.

Or what if you have all of your ducks in a row, but your age judgement is more about how you feel? What kind of life have you lived where you hit 50 and still want to go out with your friends now and again and do things, or are you sore, fat and basically unmotivated.

I'd say that the truth about "old" is what is your frame of mind in conjunction with your capabilities against your life standing versus where you want to be. I suppose the most "acceptable" old is that you hit 60, and you feel however you feel physically, but you lived your life and did most of what you wanted to do with a few more things on the horizon.

All of that aside, I'd say that the 'societal old" falls somewhere around 45 because at that point there are things you are expected to be doing or bow out of doing based on age. And so, "old" is where you have no recourse but to begin putting certain things "away" forever in lieu of the younger generation up to bat.

You are truly old when you can't have kids anymore.

Shredder and Krang combined had the biggest arsenal of any villains in all of the cartoons.

That doesn't seem like a good benchmark. Some ladies hit early menopause, and dudes can have kids into the 100s, technically.

Well in defense of that other post, there are more than biological reasons for this. Socially speaking there are people that will turn their nose up at an "age-out" situation for some men trying to have kids, as I sort of touched on in the post above.

I suppose it depends on what you mean, actually elderly or when we start to see ourselves as 'old'. I'm sure I've been calling my self old since I was about 27/28 but if I think of old as in elderly, then that's way later, past middle age. .. which is what? 38/40 -65ish? (middle age I mean) I think you are classed as a senior citizen at 60 here but I tend to see elderly as somewhere in the 70s, past 75 maybe.

Fun Fact: everyone in here is older in days than they are in years.

Judging by how often I hear people complaining that they're old, I'd say the 20s and 30s ages have it.

The word "old" could be used to describe any age or any thing.

For men: you are old when you start to think you are old or when you stop to think in a creative way.
For women: you are old when men stop desiring to have sex with you or when you are married.

It's pretty obvious:

70+: You can die at any time, you are official old

60+: You're old, but you have 10-15 years left if you're lucky

50+: You're middle age, your best years are behind you

40: This is the beginning of the end, you better make this decade count

30: Now it's become the new 20's, but you're an official adult

It's funny, back in "the old days," you were already expected to be married and have 2 kids by the age of 25. Nowadays in the "modern society" that's no longer the cultural norm. There's a reason why, "30 is the new 20" has become the new official norm.

Legends never die. If you exist as a luminous being, age is irrelevant.

Someone at my job says 40 is the new 20, and she's in her mid-30s.
