Once the tech advances even more and maybe multicolored objects are the norm, imagine the potential for custom figures, gift making, etc.

sigh.. halfway then problems
I will say this. if it wasn't for the damn support material messing up things, the quality would be damn close to shapeways.

problem fixed.. trying something simpler. 3D Leonardo.
Damn, too. that technodrome would have been the same size as my shapeways one, and not cost me $700's to print

That's pretty neat. Is the material expensive to replace? Also wondering if it's easily paintable.
Although the structure inside almost weirds me out slightly. lol |

So exciting, as I mentioned I'll wait on this one until the tech matures but I do get jelly when I see people playing with them now even if they're still rough.
Maybe you should try to print out the many models online that are easier and proven to be able to 3D print nicely instead of your models? I do like that technodrome, it's like an NES 8-bit looking one. |

re - proven printers. I download two 3D yoda prints from one of the sites that claims they are proven printable. I will try them eventually. right now i am trying my custom stuff.
3D leo came out pretty damn good. for some reason, it did not print his swords. but, it DID print his mask ties and bolo ties. two details that shapeways missed. unfortunately they broke off when i removed the support structure..but at least they printed. I'm going to try and increase the poly count so it doesn't look so blocky...hoping that fixes things. but so far, i am pretty pleased with the results. you get what you pay for with 3D printers, and a $2,000 model is MUCH more reliable than a wood based $250 model.

3D Technodrome - Try 2.
Everything was going perfectly for 4 days. then I tried to change filament, which was running out on a new spool. an extruded bit caused everything to go out of alignment and I had to stop :/. sigh. on the other hand, I am GD blown away by the level of detail and quality this thing builds. If I can jsut get it to complete my most complicated model, it'd look amazing!

something i've been wondering myself. but i think removing all that support detail around the wheels is going to be a damaging pain in the model.
I have to find a way to get it to build with as little support material as possible...but it'll be a day or two before i feel like tryng again.

That is a freaking intense 3D model you're working on there... go for Attempt #3! Our lives will not be fulfilled until you succeed! Seriously, pretty cool stuff...

Omg. Sorry to admit that I burst out laughing, that photo was worth the share. What the heck happened? It looks like the machine just said, "**** THIS!" and had a fit.

It's all in the printer growing pains. Not sure WHAT happened. it LOOKED like it was printing OK when I left it...but something obviously went wrong. I'm pausing all test prints until monday when my new web cam gets here. that way, when I leave work, I can at least see that it's working right so Idon't come back to that again
