I worked on aversion once, for a story I wrote, which is more reboot and less AU. but there are two essential difference between most normal versions of TMNT, and mine;
They are not ninjas, and the nagi/Saki relationship is altered. Here, Hamato Yoshi and Oroku Nagi were two Japanese War orphans after World War two, who were brought to the U.S. after the war. They were taken in by a Taoist monastery in New York's (Empire City, in my story) Chinatown, where the head monk raised the two and taught them Chinese martial arts. The monastery guards a green 'elixir of life', which the monks believe is a product of taoist alchemy. As he grows up, Nagi grows tired of only using his martial arts for defense, and slowly turns the other younger students against the head monk. One day, he assassinates the head monks, just as Yoshi is returning from buying four baby turtles from the pet store. Nagi and Yoshi fight, but during the struggle, the sealed glass container containing the elixir of life shatters, spilling he green goo all over Yoshi and the turtles. Yoshi collects the turtles, some of the monastery's weapons and equipment and flees into the sewers, while Nagi takes over the monastery, and reorganizes the formerly peaceful monks into a martial arts Tong, the foot. Nagi dons a suit of Samurai-like armor to honor his Japanese heritage, and calls himself the shredder. Yoshi, now calling himself splinter, raises the four turtles in an old speakeasy he found in the sewers, trains them in wudang kung-fu, and gives them the Non-Japanese equivalent of their traditional weapons (the tekpi, the nangun, the tabak-toyok, and a set of dao swords) sends them on a mission to eliminate Nagi and his criminal empire. The turtles manage to destroy the monastery, and Nagi is killed in the battle, but Nagi's son, Ororku Saki, takes up the mantle of the shredder, and launches an ongoing war against the turtles. And the cycle of revenge begins. Later, they start meeting human allies, (like April) who just call them 'ninjas' just because they can do martial arts, wear the bandannas, and they sneak around. So the 'ninja turtle thing is more of an inaccurate label here, rather than being actual ninjas. And that's my turtle AU XD.

Heeey, my 'raised in a speakeasy idea' bro .
It's a lot more sensible, all things considered.

I hate to double-post, but I did realize something.
What makes us think that a rat who barely knew the man who killed his master - who after years upon years of forcing four boys to train in martial arts in a sewer - and as their sole teacher with forbidden access to the outside world - is going to end up with masters of their craft? What makes Splinter think that he can have students able to leap around buildings in their first experience outside the sewers? What if, because of all these factors: having a single teacher, having that single teacher be the only person the turtles knew, never setting a foot outside the sewers most of their lives, their sole master having never been formally taught, and being crazed for revenge, and being children...the turtles sucked at being ninjas? I think about the Daughters of Aku in Samurai Jack - how after a lifetime of training trapped inside a mountain, that they all failed as soon as they were let loose into the world. I would imagine something similar with the turtles, except with even less preparation because Splinter never had formal training himself. What if the story was about their self-improvement and self-discovery? Realizing that Splinter was nuts in many capacities, growing a circle of friendships, finding their own authority figures and teachers in addition to Splinter, becoming authority figures and teachers for someone themselves, realizing that they are in charge of their own destinies, one or two of them deciding to just be a Mutant Turtle at the end of everything. The hitch in this, at least in regards to my storyline, is that Splinter is formally trained by Hamato Yoshi. But, he still wasn't able to teach the turtles to the fullest capacity because he insisted on living reclusively, mostly fearing what the outside world would think of them or do to them. And having no knowledge of the Utroms intentions for his mutation

Every alt version of TMNT I've come up with in my head is pretty much a variation on a theme by Michael Zulli.

With all appearances of New England in TMNT, why not the turtles living in the Boston sewers instead?

Admittedly though, given that Eastman and Laird lived in Massachusetts at the time they made TMNT, Boston might have been better for inspiration. Most Marvel books were set in New York because that's where the writers lived, it would only make sense if a comic from Massachusetts was set in Massachusetts. |

I do think it would be cool if TMNT took place in other locations.
Somewhere on the Californian coast might be interesting. Especially since California is a hellova lot closer to Japan than New York. And having the turtles living near a beach might be a huge convenience to them. And boy, if Mike HAS to have a surfer attitude, it's much more appropriate there . The San Francisco Bay area would be a pretty interesting location. It has the fourth largest Japanese-American population in the US, it has beaches for the turtles to use to their advantage, it has Silicon Valley where TCRI and Stockgen could be stationed...I think there's a lot more there that would make more sense story-wise than in New York. Plus, it would be so much warmer year-round unless they have to go into the mountains in northern California at some point.

A lot of cool ideas in this thread
Wow it's funny I've wondered that same exact thing, what if the TMNT were based in San Francisco. I think it would be a cool Elseworlds story That's a really cool take on things Powder, even if you don't make a comic out of it anytime soon I'd be interested in hearing more about it Quote:

I really like that. The only thing I would change is I'd make the turtles be in a pond in like a meditation garden somewhere in the heart of the monastery rather than four turtles bought at a pet shop; then they're mutated by mistake when the elixir spills. I really like the setting because then you have unlimited options, you can let the audience assume that unless stated otherwise, the state of the world of the show is the same as in our world, and then anytime a new facet of society is explored in the show you can decide if it's going to be the same as our world or slightly different (like calling NYC Empite City, a nice touch) or significantly different (like maybe there's steampunk technology also,

Not entirely an Alternate Universe, but the plot of the script I’m writing for fun goes like this.
April is working as an Intern at stockgen is part of the team developing M.O.U.S.E.R.S. While arriving at work she overhears Stockman talking to someone about changes that had been implemented to the M.O.U.S.E.R.S. Central purpose. April knows all changes to the M.O.U.S.E.R.S are reported to the team. Since there have been no reports of changes she immediately calls up the schematics learns that the M.O.U.S.E.R.S. Central Programing had been modified from making them rodent exterminators, to weapons of war. She immediately downloads the schematics to be reported to the authorities. Unfortunately for her, the download doesn’t go unnoticed. Stockman attempts to have her apprihended by security, but when she gives them the slip he send the M.O.U.S.E.R.S. After her to eliminate her. This results in her ending up in the sewers in her attempts to escape them. In the sewers, Raph and Mikey have used their ninja skills (or ‘three-fingered ninja discount’ as Mikey puts it) to get some pizzas. Leo admonishes them for it, and Splinter punishes the two of them by saying they just volunteered to clean the lair that evening. However just as Splinter is helping himself to a slice of spicy sausage pizza he breaks into a heavy coughing fit. The old rat brushes off his sons concerns and says that it was just the nagging remains of a previous cold that just refuses to die. While Raph and Mikey get started on cleaning the dojo, Leonardo escorts his father down to Donnie’s lab. When Leo leaves the lab to supervise his other brothers. Donnie tells Splinter that the others should be informed that the illness is because he is dying. Splinter adamantly refuses citing that while it is true he would die soon, and once he is gone the only thing they would have is each other. He can’t let his passing distract them from that. Donnie doesn’t agree, but reluctantly accepts his fathers wishes. At that moment there is the sound of April screaming. Donnie calls up some of the cameras he has in the sewers and catches sight of the M.O.U.S.E.R.S. chasing April. Moments later he telling his brothers about what’s going on and what he believes should be done. Raph at first wants nothing to do with it since it’s just one human and the whole issue doesn’t involve them. Donnie however points out the tunnel the woman is running down leads to a dead end and once she reaches it those things hunting her would be on her like Mikey on pizza. Mikey doesn’t like the idea of having the ability to save a person and ultimately doing nothing. Leo then says capitalizes on all arguments and says yeah it doesn’t involve them, but eventually people would come across her body. And when that happens more humans would come to learn why she was their and how she died. And eventually that could bring unknown people stumbling upon their secret lair. For that reason, they should do something. The Turtles defeat the M.O.U.S.E.R.S. But find April is heavily wounded by the robots and would not make it without immediate help. They reluctantly carry her back to their lair so Donnie can patch her up. Donnie picks up one of the M.O.U.S.E.R.S. For further study as to what the robots were. As soon as they are gone, one of the damaged M.O.U.S.E.R.S. Reactivates and returns to Stockman to deliver footage about what defeated it. Stockman is amazed by what he sees. He later is approached by Karai and Hun who are there to punish Stockman for the infiltration. Stockman tries to convince them that the matter has been dealt with and there is no harm done. He also shows them the images of the Turtles that his M.O.U.S.E.R.S. Have collected as something that would make up for it. Karai is interested and impressed but Hun still removes fingers from Stockman’s hand as payment while Karai calls the Shredder about the Turtles. At the lair the Turtles have brought April to Donnie’s lab. April is groggy and dazed from blood loss and Donnie has several lights shining towards her in order to block them from her getting a good look at them. He also gives her a sedative to re Mikey is looking through her jacket pockets and comes across her wallet which enables them to know the identity of the woman they are saving. And also he finds the flashdrive that she used to download the information. Splinter over hears his sons and immediatly notices the young human woman. Leo and the others leave Donnie to tend to April, while they explain what has been going on. Once April’s injuries are tended to, the Turtles leave her on a park bench. But stay close by until someone comes along who can help her, or she wakes up on her own. She is discovered by Casey Jones and his friend Angel, the two of them as April about what happened to her. April has vague flashes of seeing inhuman figures appear in the sewers, a green face hovering over her, and the memory of a three-fingered hand gently touching hers. But instead brushes everything away as something that she isn’t even sure she believes. Reaching into her pocket she finds her flash drive missing, she starts to ask Casey and Angel if they had seen it, but then thinks better of it. At home April is greeted by her room-mate Irma, who shows immediate concern for what happened to her. April just calmly tells he that she just wants to go to bed. All the while, April wonders about who or what saved her. In the mean time Donnie is studying the flash drive that April had on her and starts to study it’s contents at the dining room table. Splinter comes into the kitchen to make himself some tea and asks Donatello why he’s still awake. The purple-masked Turtle indicates the mouser that he had picked up and says that these bots wouldn’t have been chasing April for any random reason. And it turns out the flashdrive she was carrying had some information on these bots. Originally they were meant to be a means to deal with the rodent population in the city. But for some reason they have been altered by for a much more sinister purpose. And there is one word or maybe a name that kept popping up. Splinter tells his son that would be better discussed in the morning wheneveryone is awake. As Donnie gets up to head off to bed, he glances at Splinter and says “Remember when I was a little kid...I had said I didn’t see why we couldn’t stay in Japan, and you said that I would understand one day. It’s been years since and I still understand nothing about why we had to leave our home, why we had to leave our lives behind.” Splinter responds that is a story that will remain for another time. After Donnie has gone to his room, Splinter sees for himself the name that Donnie kept seeing is the word “Shredder”. Last edited by victory_angel; 03-18-2018 at 01:52 AM. |

Continued from previous post
April is walking around the park area where she had been left hoping to find some clue. She notices some strange foot impressions by a storm drain. Angel is walking home from her classes at NYU sees April and the two begin talking. Angel points out it looked as though April was looking for something. April says she was looking for a flashdrive that she lost and was hoping it was some how dropped around there. Angel jokingly ask if their was something important on it such as military secrets. However, when April looks anxious in responce and says she needs to tell someone about this but wants to talk somewhere private. Angel invites April to the apartment where she lives with her mother. An individual with a tattoo of a purple dragon over hears their conversation and reports to Hun. Before they talk, April says that anything she says can’t be repeated outside those walls. Angel agrees and April begins explaining everything, this same conversation is also has Donnie explaining the M.O.U.S.E.R.S. To his brothers. M.O.U.S.E.R.S. Was an acronym that stood for Mobilized Operative Unguided Search and Extermination Rodent Slayers. Their original function was to serve as bipedal rat catchers. However their developer, Baxter Stockman had augmented their central purpose into something that can be used as a weapon. Such as carrying explosive into buildings, assassinating targeted individuals under the noses of security personnel, downloading or stealing classified documents. And because of that the name of M.O.U.S.E.R.S. Stood for “Mobile Operation Undercover Search and Elimination Robotic Sentries” Both Leo and Angel point out that is a dangerous weapon to be in the hands of any government since would make them appear oppressive. But in the hands of a terrorist it would be even worse. April/Donnie agree and mention someone by the name of the Shredder appeared in the info and that may be the person who is funding Stockman’s M.O.U.S.E.R.S. Mikey points out that they got rid of them, so what was the problem. Donnie says that they got rid of the ones that were after April O’Neil. Likely because of the information that was contained on that Thumbdrive she had, but also as a convenient means of testing them. Below the apartment truck stands idol, this is actually Hun listening in on the conversation with Karai and Stockman. Stockman is surprised that his M.O.U.S.E.R.S. Had failed to eliminate April O’Neil since they were designed to be fool proof. Karai just makes a snide comment about using a robot to do a ninja’s job. She then asks about the other woman with April. The operative calls up info and says this is Angel Bridges, law student at NYU. Her mother is a supreme court attorney named Brooklyn Bridges who runs the Bridges Defence & Law. Angel questions how April was able to get away from the M.O.U.S.E.R.S. And says she doesn’t know herself. She just remembered seeing a group of people just appear out of nowhere, and the crazy part is they looked like giant turtles. Back at the lair, Leo asks Donnie if Stockman would try to go after April again. Donnie states that as long as she lives, she is a threat to Stockman and whoever the Shredder is. |

What skyscraper would shrink in "The Incredible Shrinking Turtles" Where would Baxter Stockman and Shredder be spotted in "Enter the Fly"? Where would Bebop and Rocksteady wreak havoc in "Invasion of the Punk Frogs"? Where would Raphael suggest Donatello's time stopper to be dumped in "Donatello Makes Time"? What would Shredder try to blowup in "Something Fishy Goes Down?" What would Krang steal in "Turtles in Time"? Last edited by Original TMNT Cartoon Fan; 03-19-2018 at 12:59 PM. |

Nah, you didn't do that. I just thought it was cool that I wasn't the only one considering that possibility.

My Alternate Universe idea is straight up fanfiction. Toss the Turtles into Fallout (the game series) The ninja wars are still going on even hundreds of years after the apocalypse only now the typical street gangs are raiders and clans. April is a Vault Dweller on a mission, Casey is either a raider leader or a loner out for revenge. Stockman is a mad scientist getting everyone hooked on drugs and under his control (until this petty plan fails and he runs off to become a bigger problem later on)
April meets the turtles and Splinter, they save her from raiders. They are all products of an experiment that came years after the Forced Evolution Virus was first implemented and tweaked to create more stable life forms (Mutagen has to be introduced in this somewhere. Aliens aren't uncommon in Fallout soooo...) They become friends and adventures are had. This almost plays out like Fast Forward since the turtles have no pressing reason to remain hidden except for the fact that they all carry heavy bounties on their heads. They are valuable runaway experiments. The Footclan is probably getting paid to capture them dead or alive. Gotta have them bottle caps! Bishop is possibly in the Brotherhood of Steel, rising up the ranks and acting noble but he has plans to take over. Last edited by Dejablue; 09-09-2018 at 08:22 PM. |
