Favourite pop culture references in tmnt?

What are your favourite pop culture references in tmnt?

My personal favourite is during the 2nd episode of the Original Cartoon, Enter the Shredder, when the turtles confront Bebop and Rocksteady for the first time, with Raphael saying:

"Didn't I see you in the Jungle Book?"

I found that hilarious because 1) I friggin love the Jungle Book, 2) there are no rhinos and pigs in the Jungle Book 1967 film depite Bebop and Rocksteady looking like something out of that film (minus the clothes and 3) the thought of Bebop and Rocksteady being in one of the Jungle Book's musical numbers is hilarious

Shredder and Krang combined had the biggest arsenal of any villains in all of the cartoons.

I dig all of the horror stuff that they have referenced. 2012 got a bit heavy with it but it still worked for me. Every incarnation has been influenced by what that series' creators are "into" so it was great that there was one that went full force on horror. I just wish they'd had a Sadako analogue.

On the same note (because you know, same genre), I love when they reference Lovecraft but not when it's so in-your-face like "Rocks" was. That story just felt pretentious and pandering. This is a problem I've run into frequently with Lovecraft references, though.

I liked all the sci-fi references in the 2003 series.

I also liked the King Kong references in the 1987 series, in episodes such as Camera Bugged and The Big Blow-Out.

The 2k3 series had constant Star Trek and Star Wars references, it actually got annoying after awhile due to how common they were.

The original cartoon's episode titles were constant references to old movies or shows, like "The Ice Creature Cometh" and "Phantom of the Sewers," etc.

And parodied 1950's and 60's science fiction plots a lot.

Perhaps Raphael meant the 1942 version with Sabu. There was a Pig in the film. Didn't see a rhino though.

Definetly Possible. Although I'd say its most likely the 1967 film considering its enormous success and popularity, even well into the 80s. A well timed and funny reference though regardless!

I also liked the reference to Tarzan in 'The Gang's all here" when Michelangelo saved April with the latter saying: "You may be Tarzan, but I'm not Jane!"

He probably did, but just made that remark to make fun of B&R.

I'm gonna indirectly answer your question and say that I don't really care what TMNT reference as long as they pull it off well. I mean, all of the old sci-fi and horror stuff they reference are stuff I've never watched, so it's like watching a brand new plot for me.

There are so many it's hard to keep track. I enjoy most if not all of them.

Some favorites are Eric Talbot referencing The Misfits in Mirage, & Ciro's many references to The Howard Stern Show & the 90's Playmates TMNT toys.

"Didn't we see these guys on Wrestlemania?"

Not that it was a good line or anything. Just a huge wrestling fan growing up, so that always landed for me.

I had no idea until I got boradband. Before that, titles made no sense to me.

Agreed. Pop culture references are fun, imo, even the ones that I have no knowledge of.

That funny because of the situation they were in, not if they had made that joke in any other setting.
