Easy goal to reach since he wasn't scary.

"I would say a good chunk of the movie is a lot of improvisation," said Micah Abbey.
Guess with the script and streaming of it both available, someone with enough time to kill could see just how true that statement is. And if any adlibed parts were decent or cringy crap that shouldn't have stayed in...

For a while, since the movie trailer was revealed, I just felt so disappointed with tmnt as a whole.

Cause I just hated how it looked. The art style. Animation style. Redesigns. Everything.

But... I watched. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Don't get the buzz around it. But at least I gave it a chance, just so I could move on. I'm not at all invested in this universe whatsoever.

Decided to rewatch every other show until it blows over and we get a new version.

As a fan from the 80s it was an okay watch. I tend to like most films and be rather forgiving. I watched it at the cinema and it was fun in a forgettable way. I will probably watch it again maybe once every year or two as I do with most Turtles films.

However, the fact that this has been widely praised and the 1990 film is rated 'rotten' on rotten tomatoes seriously suggests to me that there's something wrong with some film critics. I really do not understand why anyone would like this more than the original film. You can call it nostalgia as I am in my forties now, but there are more heartfelt scenes in the first film (Splinter's talk with Raphael, Leo embracing Raph when he comes to in the the farmhouse, the campfire scene). The action is better too (especially the scene where the Foot ambush the guys in April's apartment and in the final fight with Shredder). This film seems sillier and emptier by comparison. Don't get me wrong - I am not saying that the original film (as much as I love it) should be considered a cinematic masterpiece. I do though consider it one of the better comic book films and am surprised that people prefer Mutant Mayhem.

I watch a fair amount of classic and foreign cinema (still plenty gaps there in my viewing), and in those respects my tastes tend to align with much film criticism. However, when it comes to entertainment, I think it is very important to keep an open mind and maintain your own opinions and free thinking, rather than always deferring to so-called 'experts' - Mutant Mayhem vs 1990 is an example of that.

We’ve been saying that for years now, and Rotten Tomatoes has recently been exposed as a shill site that gives certain movies more praise than they truly deserve if the paycheck is big enough.

Mutant Mayhem, in my humble opinion, is absolute garbage compared to the 1990 classic. For instance, the turtles are nothing but common thieves in Mayhem, whereas in the 1990 film they at least pay for their pizza (but don’t tip the pizza guy if he’s late). Also, Splinter in the 1990 film is a wise and humble ninja master whom the turtles greatly respect while Mayhem Splinter is a bigoted joke of a dad who learned kung fu from movies and calls it ninjutsu and his sons think he’s a joke too.

Even talking about Mutant Mayhem to that extent or even comparing it to 1990 at all is affording the movie way, way more value than either its worth or how much value anyone that worked on the movie felt toward the TMNT to begin wtih.

Well, that's not quite right. Rotten Tomatoes can't be a shill site, it literally just tallies up reviewers' review scores to form an average... and you can see all of the specific reviews its pulling from. So there's total transparency. Now, are a lot of reviewers whose reviews are being tallied getting paid or "influenced" by a studio? That's a different conversation, but it has nothing to do with Rotten Tomatoes.

Its garbage compared to garbage. Its very existence would be offensive if it was even worthy of being taken seriously as a movie, let alone a TMNT movie. But it's not.

The film's depiction of Splinter is probably its biggest betrayal to the franchise. I am all for trying new things or directions, but they made him into a joke character rather than the wise and sage one he is meant to be.

Yeah I suppose that is true as well. I was just expressing my confusion at how this can be rated as higher quality? It makes zero sense.

For the record, Rotten Tomatoes was just an example because it is an aggregator site, and it is very flawed because a score over 60 per cent (I believe) gets it rated fresh, when 6/10 is merely slightly above average rather than 'good'. I prefer metacritic or even letterboxd but even those are flawed.

But you are right - I shouldn't have mentioned it in the same breath as the original film. It just makes no sense having watched it that it's rated higher. I have also seen better or equal animated movies that have been destroyed so I am thinking someone is paying for reviews. This seems like the type of film that could be seen as mediocre or average, or widely castigated, but instead it's been praised. Some film criticism just seems so random to me.

Elaborate on what you mean.

In Mirage, Splinter prepares the guys for an assassination mission against Shredder. He has a his ruthless side for sure, same as in IDW. However, he's also always been wise and clever and cares deeply about them. He's never been a total muppet and joke character like he is in Mutant Mayhem (see edit for you correcting me there).

Edit: you mean Rise. I have never watched that show. Tried the first episode and didn't like it. I will watch it at some point probably for completion's sake, but it doesn't really appeal. I still enjoy 1987 for nostalgia purposes, 2003 is my favourite and a decent enough adaptation of the comics given the constraints Laird and others were under, and I enjoy the 2012 show too. But Rise isn't my thing.

I also said it was the film's biggest betrayal of the franchise, not that Splinter had never been treated with such disrespect elsewhere.

Is he even worse in Rise? Jesus.

Rise isn't even on my radar really hence me forgetting it.

They made Rise Splinter into this negligent lazy couch potato I never finished Rise (gave up after 5 episodes) but allegedly he got better

Fair enough. Thanks for letting me know. I remember seeing him act stupidly in the first episode which was part of what discouraged me from watching further.

Apparently the film is quite good though.

Rise Splinter is way worse. It's indescribable how something as bad as that was greenlit and made it to the public.

Rise Splinter does get better.
No, I don't care about rise.
But

SPOILER ALERT

He was basically Bruce Lee, fallen from grace when he got mutated, and ended up taking care of the turtles.
And constantly relieves his glory days watching himself (as a martial artist action movie actor) in his old movies, and just wasting away everyday.

But eventually, he snaps out of it, and goes on missions and everything.

I'd say his story is the highlight of Rise.

But you have to sit through a lot of filler episodes to start getting there. And then you have to sit through more filler, before the show dives back into his backstory again.

tl;dr Rise Splinter was a slow cook. Mayhem Splinter is just irredeemable garbage.
