But if this ends up being set in, I dunno, Neo-New York City with non-Japanese characters, it will just feel different. Not like Akira. If there's gonna be a live-action Akira movie someday, then I think it's better to let the Japanese handle it. Might as well just create your own story while being influenced by Akira, but whatever. Maybe the studio decided this would be more profitable.
I know the setting of Akira very well, thanks. I also understand what you're saying, but I still don't see it making a difference. You're not talking about a piece of fiction that takes place in the Edo period being shifted to a modern American setting. You're talking about a dystopian cyberpunk future that is reminiscent of many many other pieces of science fiction.

Again, I understand you, but of all the issues to have with a possible American live-action adaptation of Akira, Nolan and talks of yet another overblown Hollywood trilogy are front and center, this isn't one of them.

The older ones are mostly butchered versions of the arcs, screwed and chopped to congeal something resembling a movie. However, the newest ones, Strong World and Film Z, are both excellent.

perosnally I think Akira loses some of its meat not being set in a country that actually have experienced a nuclear bombing and not just the in-canon WWIII of the Akira universe.

That aside, a American Kaneda that doesn't sound like Cam Clarke, no thank you.

Could I watch these movies without spoilers. I'm on episode 81.

Not even close, bud. You're hardly into the series at all and both movies take place after the events of episode 516 in the anime.

Pro-tip: Read the manga to catch up quickly, then go back and watch the anime at your leisure.

To get One Piece East Blue 1-9 is $35.19 on Amazon. Not bad at all. I may pick up the 1-3 collection with any Christmas money I get.

The Director of Thor: Ragnarok might direct the live action Akira movie.
