It's like... I don't regret seeing it, but I'm not super glad I did either.

I'm a huge fan of how fast everyone went from being 100% "Venom without Spider-Man? What a garbage idea!" TO "bEST MOVIE EVAR!!!!" just because they got his eyes and tongue right.

Yeah, I know. Everybody got on board the hype train without a whimper after the movie came out. Weird.

It's how people are anymore.

"Bitch, whine, bitch, whine, doomsday prophecy, bitch, whine, etc.", two years straight before Movie X comes out.

Movie comes out. "OOOOH, SHINY! ME LOVE THING!"

It's like how at first, everyone hated The Rock, to the point of chanting "Die, Rocky, Die!" at him for years. Now everyone's in romantic love with him. Absolutely nothing changed, aside from people one day got sick of hating him and decided to love him instead. He didn't actually do anything differently to change their opinions, it was like a collective form of mass hysteria. "Didn't you hate this guy just yesterday?" "Yeah, but... I'unno."

People are f*ckin' weird.

The way it seemed to me is that everyone was absolutely ready to hate the film, until it actually came out and turned out to be better than they expected.

I haven't seen the film, but speaking on a general consensus, that's the vibe I got. I haven't heard any group clamoring that it's great. While it's making a ton of money, I assume that's from the casual audience, who weren't really chiming in with educated opinions on the subject anyway.

I have a feeling I won't like it. But what do I know? I love BvS and can't sit through Guardians of the Galaxy.

So I just realised something, outside of Disney's money making machine called the MCU, the two most successful movies based on Marvel characters are Spider-Man 3 and Venom.

What about films like Deadpool or Logan?

Perhaps he means adjusted for inflation? Good question.

Although Venom wouldn't be there, in that case. So I'unno.

I don't know about inflation, just comparing the worldwide box office. Deadpool and Logan are definitely less successful than Venom however.

Without adjusting for inflation, this is how they rank:
  1. Spider-Man 3, $890.9 million
  2. Venom, $844 million
  3. Spider-Man, $821.7 million
  4. Spider-Man 2, $783.8 million
  5. Deadpool, $783.1 million
  6. The Amazing Spider-Man, $757.9 million
  7. X-Men: Days of Future Past, $747.9 million
  8. Deadpool 2, $734.2 million
  9. The Amazing Spider-Man 2, $709 million
  10. Logan, $619 million
  11. X-Men: Apocalypse, $543.9 million
  12. X-Men: The Last Stand, $459.4 million
  13. The Wolverine, $414.8 million
  14. X2, $407.7 million
  15. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, $373.1 million
  16. X-Men: First Class, $353.6 million
  17. Fantastic Four, $330.6 million
  18. X-Men, $296.3 million
  19. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, $290 million
  20. Hulk, $245.4 million
  21. Ghost Rider, $228.7 million
  22. Daredevil, $179.2 million
  23. FANT4STIC, $168 million
  24. Blade II, $155 million
  25. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, $132.6 million
  26. Blade, $131.2 million
  27. Blade: Trinity, $128.9 million
  28. Elektra, $56.7 million
  29. The Punisher 2004, $54.7 million
  30. Howard the Duck, $38 million
  31. Punisher: War Zone, $10.1 million
  32. Man-Thing, $1.1 million
  33. Captain America 1990, $10,173

The original Punisher isn't on there because I can't find any data. MIB and the sequels aren't because I legitmately don't know who actually owns the rights to the comics. And the Mark Millar based stuff isn't actually tied to Marvel, other than Marvel being the initial publisher.

Not sure about Big Hero Six, it's not part of the MCU but it's still distributed by Disney.

It's very interesting. Especially if you want to consider the fact that Spider-Man 3 was also heavily marketed to feature Venom.

I really have to wonder if it's just part of the genius of Todd McFarlane's character designs. Venom is so appealing on a visual level. Simple and elegant, but still over-the-top, stylish, and badass.

Or does Tom Hardy have that big of a fan-base?

Did they spend twice as much on marketing?

Or is the Comic book movie market, as successful as it is, only beginning to grow, and can we therefor expect Venom 2, Morbius, and Into the Spider-Verse to also eclipse past Spider-Man films?

You really have to wonder.

As a major comic book and comic book movie fan, who has seen every Spider-Man movie in theaters, I couldn't drag myself to go see this. Starting to look like I was alone in that.

- Quick, melodramatic, aside: a year or two ago, I would have seen this in theaters, due to my piqued curiosity, despite terrible critical reception. Once BvS was panned and I ended up loving it, I thought "hey, you really just gotta decide for yourself. 'One man's trash is another man's treasure, yada, yada.."

Then came Suicide Squad and Justice League. Two films I was still wagging my tail to see on opening week, despite the harsh critical blow that had been dealt to them, by us, the fan community. Two films that were so bad, I couldn't believe it at first. Two films that made me realize the Schumacher-Batman films weren't really all that long ago.

Ever since, I've been very skeptical of any comic book film that receives a good spankin from the critics. Hope I don't miss anything good on account of that.

Is it sexist of me to think some of the creative descisions in Venom suddenly make more sense when you know a woman had a hand in the script?

It makes a couple of things make a lot of sense in my head. But it could just as easily have been as a result of sticky notes from "upstairs."

Watched it last night.

I enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting. Apparently, Tom Hardy covereth a multitude of sins.
