Would you want a remaster of the '87 show?

With Batman: TAS coming out on Blu-ray in 2018, I started thinking about other 80s and 90s shows potentially getting the HD treatment.

I think the first season in particular could look great in HD, given its exceptional animation quality...maybe as part of some kind kind of anniversary TMNT box set containing the best of the franchise, which, in a perfect world, would also have a remastered director's cut of the 1990 film.

What do you think? Should the show get an HD release or are the DVDs enough?

Definetly!

I would love a Blu-Ray with all 193 episodes, maybe not so much high quality since the show wasn't made in HD, but a Blu-Ray edition could sure fit the entire series in a very few number of discs, and fit in additional content such as turtle tips, interviews, the FW crossovers etc.

It would be a dream come true for me.

I'm no expert on these things, but would old 2D 80's animation even look any different in HD?

I don't see how they could make it look better but if they did I'd double dip.

For me, the selling point would not be the visual quality of the episodes, I would be satisfied with episodes in 480p upscaled to HD.

Rather, it would be the fact that Blu-Ray discs are capable of fitting alot more than DVDs.

I wonder how many standard definition episodes of the OT could fit into a 25 GB single layered Blu-Ray disc.

Eh I wouldn't say no, but I can do fine without a remaster. It's not really the art and animation that's the problem with the FW series, even considering all the animation errors it's plagued with. Even if you polished it into HD, it would still be the same dated 80s episodic action comedy cartoon

I really don't see the point of remastering this show. It's just going to make the choppy animation and the errors stand out more. Maybe if they cherry picked the like 20 or so episodes that are almost watchable and did some extreme alterations to them but even that seems like a waste.

I wouldn't mind a remaster but while we're at it, remaster the 2003 series and also release the Nick series on Bluray as well.

If the original film masters still exist, it could look outstanding. There's a fan restoration of the original 16mm Real Ghostbusters 2:00 promo reel happening now that looks gorgeous. Yes, animation errors and mistakes will only be MORE noticeable, but I see it more as preserving the original presentation, squeezing as much image quality out as possible-- warts and all. I would LOVE to see the original 5-part FW TMNT mini scanned/restored in HD if possible.

2003 and Nick were more than likely produced digitally, so SD is probably all that's ever going to be possible. Older material was still produced on gorgeous, gorgeous film. The 1990 film already has an outstanding 1080 BR transfer, but I would love to see Barron's VHS workprint copy.

The Nick show was done digitally and in HD.They have 1080p on their website and it's even broadcast in 1080p so there's no excuse when it comes to that show. I also don't think it's much of a stretch that they have a higher quality version of the 2003 show laying around.

of course, with 'replacement voices' fixed also.

I hear some of the international DVD releases of the old toon actually do look a little bit better simply because they didn't have to compress too many episodes on a single disc.

Yeah, brain fart on Nick. It was produced and distributed in HD obviously. I don't think the 03 show was ever transferred to a high def medium during production. Possibly HD master tapes? I wouldn't think so, but I'm not sure what the animation industry was using at that time.

The FW show was absolutely produced using 16/35mm film. If the master reels still exist, 4K transfers of the show could be scanned. It's a pretty cheap process now, too. I just had a 35mm reel scanned for the Ghostbusters doc... GORGEOUS gorgeous gorgeous.

Because the animation errors are very iconic/amusing. The 80s show wouldnt be the same without them.

WAY more cost on top of scanning/restoring the original reels, not to mention respect for the original material--warts and all.

There are waaaay too many animation errors to even warrant correcting them all. Not even just talking about the bandanna errors either, but often times characters clothing or parts of mutants/animals were colored incorrectly. One ep they forgot to draw Shredder's pants for a scene.
