Does anyone else miss 1990's/Y2K culture?

All of that millenially-timed material is an off-shoot of stuff like New Kids On The Block from the 80's.

I remember that video now that you played it, but I'd say that it's appeal was largely for people younger than I was at the time, much the same way that NKOTB would have appealed to my generation specifically at the same age but instead back in.... you know '87 or whatever it was. Milli Vanilli and all of that.

It sort of began in that configuration back then, and then evolved through "Boys II Men" and into "N Synch" and whoever else. I remember, I think it was probably my Freshman year in High School we went to a B96 B-bash and Wild Orchid was there. I was captivated - it was like porn to someone that wasn't really into that music and had no exposure to it previously

I think later on "Fergie" joined the Black Eyed Peas. I think she was a Wild Orchid chick. Imagine seeing a young Fergie doing that crap on stage as a Freshman in High School. That probably singularly pushed me to up my game in any way possible seeing that kind of woman existed

Based on the music videos released during this time period, people really liked to wear cropped tops.

Tank tops were also really popular.

That stuff was used to create sex appeal in media - less so in real life. The go-to "girl outfit" was like the sweat pants / crop top thing for a while. It was all a market manipulation alluding to "ease of access" in sexuality. Purely marketing driven.

Movies and shows are not a good measure, they always had girls showing a lot of skin for sex appeal even when it wasn't as common, nowadays female characters are all covered up while girls are showing more skin than ever in real life.

In what era are you talking about? I can only speak for the eras I've lived but
in the late 90s it was common to show the belly button, spice girls/britney were likely the culprits:


By the time I became a teenager in the 2000s showing bellybuttons was rare but most girls wore shirts that showed their stomach but it stopped before the bellybutton:



in the late 2000s/early 2010s i think girls covered up more their bellies. Now since the late 2010s it is in style again and more than ever, it's even more common to see a bellybutton than in the 90s, of course that's also because I see fat girls and 40+ old women showing off their bellies, kinda gross actually but hey who am I to judge fashion.

Tons of people remember fondly the 2000s now that enough time has passed including myself, just look at the 180 I did earlier in the thread.

It's safe to say that people will be nostalgic for the 2010s, awful decade what will people even remember from then ? Superheroes, geek culture, politics and social media defined that decade. Ugh. Horrible

Euro beats were pretty big back then in dance clubs. Eiffel 65 for example.
As for anime, Fist of the North Star, Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll were sort of considered king.

European/Australasian pop also happened to come into the spotlight as well.

Sailor Moon, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Cowboy Bebop were also popular anime that was released during that time.

In Italy Dragon ball started to be very popular in the second half of the 90s. As for european music I'm not sure someone already mentioned the Spice Girls, they were HUGE. In those years there was also an italian singer called Alexia, I think she was popular in USA as well. The australian Natalie Imbruglia also started his career in the end of the 90s.

Eh... He's not wrong. I mean years of eating disorders and other crap really messed them up. Plus they had that bizarre 'adult in a body that takes forever to grow up' thing that Tom Holland currently has. He's 25 and yet when he wears a suit he still looks like a kid playing dress up.

Not to mention, Kylie Minogue gained popularity with her early 2000's singles.

In terms of fashion, denim mini skirts were everywhere. It was weird.

were the early 90s actually any good? they seem to reek too much of the 80s still, it wasn't until the mid 90s were all the 80s stink wore off. Early 90s still have some 90s vibes but too much 80s still hanging over for it to actually be considered good? Early 2000s however is much better since the 90s did mix better with 00s than that 80s/90s mix.

1996-1999 definitely feel a lot different than 1990-1995.

By the late 90's it felt like we were merging into the early 2000's, most people started getting internet, videogames were going 3D, and it felt like television programming was getting better.

I don't look back on the early 90s with a fond nostalgia. Just personally because I liked life more in the mid to late 90s, I also think I liked more music from mid to late over the earlier stuff.

I dont like how you lump 90s and 2000s, but junk food still reigned in the 90s but it started to dwindle in the 00's.
