Exactly. I mean, go back in time a century and show off a magnet or two. They'll all think you're Magneto.

I read the reason why we don't see the Spider-Sense, is cause Spider-Man had those goggles on the mask, it helps him focus due to his sensory overload from the Spider-Sense.

I'd be fine they had wanted to play that angle (he's inexperienced and doesn't know how to fully utilize his powers blah blah blah), but instead of having him become more proficient with his spider-sense they just removed it entirely.

I think a lot of the complaints people have about this Spider-Man seeming childish and immature or unskilled at being Spider-Man are forgetting that this is really still part of the MCU Spider-Man's origin story. Yes he's already been bitten by the radioactive spider but he's very much still in the middle of the process of becoming an actual superhero, as opposed to just a superpowered individual. He has to learn how to use his powers effectively.
Like yeah, Peter botched the situation on the ferry and he totally ****ed up a bunch of people's backyards while trying to web-swing across a suburb. He probably did feel bad about it later, but it's also a relatively small blip on his current radar. You can decide in your mind that he sent those addresses to Tony Stark later for funds to be dispersed to those families to fix the damages or whatever. I am glad that we saw Peter have to run across town and the golf course and such. There is no way to web-swing across boroughs like Queens or parts of Brooklyn. And I didn't mind that Peter had a moment where he got scared of how high up he was. Even with superpowers, Peter knows that he has to be near a wall or other surface to have something to stick onto or web-swing to. If he's falling through open air then he's just as screwed as a non-superpowered individual (except for when the parachute in his suit is properly reinstalled). All in all I really enjoyed this movie despite its few flaws. I think the "hot Aunt May" running gag got old really fast, they should have come up with a different joke to keep coming back to. She was a decently cast character, but she wasn't in the movie enough to do much. Hopefully that changes in the next one. Same for Michelle (who, despite that brief remark near the end of the film, is never going to be a replacement for the Mary Jane Watson character, even if she keeps going by MJ in the movies). I liked all of the casting choices, really. I feel like people who are upset that Flash was a rival on the academic decathlon team rather than a jock or any of the other new character interpretations aren't acknowledging the fact that it's not 1962 anymore, times have changed, Peter's not walking around in a sweater vest anymore. Stories and characters can be updated to fit the times they're being told in without compromising their validity. It's all about striking a balance, and I think some people get so caught up in their initial knee-jerk reaction that they don't give themselves a chance to evaluate some of the updates fairly.

I haven't seen the movie yet, what were the "hot Aunt May" jokes exactly? People commenting on her looks?

The director did say the Spider-Sense will be explored in other movies, so it does exist in the MCU.

I read the same. I see it as a power that could develop layer instead of immediatemy. It could work well that way.

How much does the spider-sense play into the previous 5 Spidey flicks?

It's utilized rather regularly, especially when you consider that spider-sense is what gives Peter the ability to do all those crazy acrobatics.

I tend to believe the next one, the arc will be Peter saying, "F*** these gadgets and tech!" and then the Spidey Sense kind of manifests to compensate.

Nah, I don't see him ditch those fancy Spidey gadgets in MCU, especially those VERY expressive Spidey eyes. And the web shooters, he can't come up with something like that himself.

To each their own I guess. My biggest problem with it was the characters "in name only" aspect. You are absolutely right that Michelle is NOT a replacement for Mary-Jane- but then neither is this version of Flash. Thompson was always that ONE character who treated Peter as a joke, while at the same time fawning like a puppy over Spidey in a huge case of hero-worship; the irony of it being that he had no idea his idol was the guy he constantly stepped on! He's that BMOC who walks all over the little guys Peter strives to protect and aid. That dynamic is missing when they are just rivals on a team- part of their relationship has always been based on the "brains vs brawn" of Peter being super smart while Flash is the athletic star. (And Peter knowing that due to his powers he could benchpress Flash with one hand but he can never let anyone KNOW that he has Flash beat in the brawn category too!) Knee jerk reaction? Hardly. It's more like annoyance that the characters were "updated" without any REAL understanding of WHY they were what they were in the first place! One poster mentioned Betty and Ned- while I liked the character as written, this removes the characters from the roles they have held in the comics. Betty as an anchor on a high school news channel has lost the connection she had to the Bugle as Jameson's harried assistant, and Ned's situation is much the same. Making them Peter's classmates effectively removes their connections to the wider world they linked him to in the comics. One could say Betty could end up at the Bugle later, but then it would be a step down from her current placement. IE- why woyld she take a job as a low-paid assistant to a prickish editor when she could have a tv news job? Pointless change.

Hell, the Daily Bugle doesn't even need to exist in this world, does it? Think about it. The only reason they have Spidey pictures is because Peter takes his own pictures. The reason he takes his own pictures is so that he can get some extra cash to support his ailing aunt. May is neither sick nor poor in this iteration, and even if she were then Tony Stark would pay for everything without a second thought.
It doesn't seem like a big deal at first until you realize how fascinating all these Peter/Spidey dynamics are. Peter degrades Spider-Man by selling his own pics to the Bugle - what irony! Flash sneers at Parker but adores Spidey - what irony! May hates Spider-Man but loves Peter with all her heart - what irony!...etc. Lots of interesting character relationships Peter can have that are completely overlooked in this version. The secret identity aspect goes much farther than just "hmm, isn't it interesting that we've never seen Spidey and Peter in the same room?" |

If he can seamlessly embed the UI functionality of a military jet fighter into a skin-tight lycra costume, how come he can't prevent two dingus high-schoolers from hacking its firmware? Why does he have to transport classified, and mission critical equipment and alien tech in an aircraft designed in the 1950s? Couldn't he spare a couple of unmanned Iron Man drones to escort it, or did he build them just to have long distance conversations with people? I don't have a problem with outlandish tech in fiction, but if it's not consistent in the world it is supposed to exist in, then it comes off as slack writing. 1917? I doubt it.

That would have been a more fitting resolution to this one.

Definitely. But what is between Homecoming and Spider-Man: Homecoming 2? Infinity War. Nothing is really happening in a vacuum in the MCU... probably Peter will need to don that stupid suit seen at the end of Homecoming at a critical moment in Infinity War. The "I'm done with tech now!" will need to come later. And I suspect it will.

People are fawning over Marissa Tomei.
https://twitter.com/calvinstowell/st...40077572743172 I'm falling for her too, I hope I'll look as good at that age. Hard to believe she's 52, I need to boost my exercise routine and eat healthily more. Such an inspiring person. |
