Wicked movie gets release date

Quote:
“Wicked” will finally take flight in 2019.

The long-awaited “Wicked” movie adaptation will be released on Dec. 20, 2019, Universal annouced on Thursday.

Stephen Daldry is directing and Marc Platt is producing the big-screen take on the hit Broadway musical and bestselling book. Both are also producing the long-running stage show.

The Tony Award-winning stage musical was adapted from Gregory Maguire’s bestselling novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” by book writer Winnie Holzman and Oscar-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who are also collaborating on the screenplay adaptation.

I hope that the movie will be about as good as the book was, although I'm certain that some of the darker and more risque stuff will be left out of the movie.

Otherwise, it's about damn time that this movie will be made.

While I am very much looking forward to this project, my biggest concern about this project is that if you look at the list of films that Stephen Daldry has directed, none of them involve special effects. I think people are going to see this will want to see Glinda come down in a bubble
Spoiler:
instead of a large machine.
The same goes for Elphaba who

flies during "Defying Gravity".
The illusion during that scene is very impressive. The ways that the witches fly do work well on stage, but in a cinematic adaptation people aren't going to want to see thing. I'm really hoping that Daldry studies special effects before principal photography begins. The fact that it won't be released for another 31/2 years means that there is plenty of time for him to work on that.

Universal has decided to postpone Wicked to accommodate its production schedule. Now that Tom Hooper's Cats has already announced casting and the cameras will soon begin rolling for that film, Universal has now scheduled that film for release on December 20, 2019 instead.

After Daldry departed the project, John M. Chu was announced to replace him as director.

Here's everything you need to know about the films. In case no one had already known, they will be divided into two parts Additional casting includes Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Tony-Award nominee Ethan Slater as Boq, and newcomer Marissa Bode as Nassarose.

Production for the film shut down due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. There were only 10 days left of filming for Part One and the only musical sequence left to film was "One Short Day". The release dates won't be affected.
