Stan Sakai previews new Usagi Yojimbo, TMNT crossover

t’s been years since Usagi Yojimbo last encountered the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the pages of a comic book, but these anthropomorphic warriors of justice will finally reunite this July in a new comic written and drawn by the legendary creator of Usagi Yojimbo, Stan Sakai himself. The special one-shot story will be available both in standard comic book format and a special hardcover edition.

In an interview with EW, Sakai discussed his plans for the story and Usagi’s bright future. Check that out below, along with an interior page from the story, a variant cover drawn by Mouse Guard‘s David Petersen, and a special bonus drawing of Usagi reading a copy of EW.

I'm glad it confirms this is also with the IDW Turtles. Usagi doesn't know these Turtles, but he knows the Mirage Turtles. Real interesting to see them keep continuity with the previous Usagi crossovers.

Stan wrote and drew, so I'm assuming under Dark Horse. Just a guess, though.

Is it just me or this comic in color? I say because of that one panel shown in color, but almost all Usagi books are in black and white.

The article says it'll be out in July.

Also, Entertainment Weekly refers to the turtles as Samurai and Usagi as a Ninja. *face palms*

The description has Sakai flat out say Usagi meets these Turtles for the first time, they have colored bandana's, and IDW is the ones who set up the crossover.

I LOVE it! Always been an Usagi fan, and love the Mirage crossovers. I've been waiting for this for years, and now it's finally here!

This is not a variant cover or anything to my knowledge (though we can surely expect a cool one, I would think!), but I guess we should've thought something was up when it was posted to Kevin's Instagram/Facebook this morning!

Peter was the one to was a close friend and collaborator with Stan Saki. Its cool to see Kevin working with Stan on a story and the fact there was a next time after Peter sold off the rights is amazing in itself.

A 40 page one-shot in all color will be great. So glad Viacom and Sakai reached a deal for Usagi to appear in both the Nick cartoon and crossover with IDW.

This is something I have wanted for such a long time. This year will be a great year getting to see Usagi meet up with the Turtles in both TV and Comic form. I really can't wait to read this one shot this summer.

This is so freaking good to hear about! Way more exciting than any Batman/TMNT crossover.
I'm in for both the standard version and the special hardcover.

I'm really curious to see if the Usagi character in this one-shot is the same old Usagi Yojimbo.
Meaning he previously met the Mirage turtles (as well as the FW?).
Will this be dealt with?

To do anything else would be bizarre. And they're at Sakai's mercy... no way he'd just be like, "Yeah yeah, it's been the IDW Turtles this whole time."

Yes, Stan has mentioned this. It's the same Usagi. It's not the same turtles. So Usagi "knows" Leo but not this Leo, and of course none of the turtles know Usagi.
