Classic Episode Discussion: It Came From Beneath The Sewers

As usual...

Another one of my favorite parts:

Shredder: DON'T EAT IN FRONT OF THE EQUIPMENT!

He'd kill me if saw me now; I'm eating my breakfast (yes, you heard me, BREAKFAST) in front of my computer at that time of this posting.

The only thing I don't get is how or why Shredder lost the first fragment. Even if he did lose the first fragment, wouldn't its power be to shrink things instead of what it did in the episode?

Discuss away.

First of all HATED the entire carneval scene and lets get to my favorite quotes:

Michelangelo - "We shoulda parked next to a pizza stand. I'm so hungry I'm hollow!"
April - "Wait a minute you guys cant come in here!"
Leonardo - "Why not? Is there a carnival dress code?"
April - "Your turtles remember?"
Raphael - "So thats why Im green ha I always thought it was something I ate!"

Man, I loved this episode! The part with Mike winning the bottle game was so cool!

Shredder explained that Baxter threw it out by accident (keep in mind, this is the wussy Baxter from the original toon)

I'd say the crystal's general power is to alter the size of any form of matter.

Yes, but doesn't shed much light on HOW it happened, just "he lost it"...

I liked this episode except for how it started the trend of calling the 2nd fragment the 1st. They don't find the 1st fragment again until Curse of the Evil Eye yet they continue to call the 2nd and 3rd fragment the 1st and 2nd. The reason that Baxter "lost" the fragment was because Shredder could still cause trouble if he had it and they needed a more original plot . I loved the look on Shredder's face after Krang harassed him about going to the Carnival.
Krang: "Splendid! Then that is where you shall go!"
Shredder: "To a carnival?"
Krang: "Yes... you'll fit in nicely with the other freaks!"

Krang is always hilarious. I didn't much like this episode.

They constantly refer to the fragment in this episode "the first fragment" and in the next ep it's "the second fragment" and in the last it's "the third and final" I'm saying they had a serious script problem basically. I thought I had worded that poorly when I wrote that post. Oh well I was in school browsing the forums when my teacher's back was turned

There was bound to be some confusion when dealing with three different items that looked the same, especially since the first 2 episodes of the storyline involved the same crystal.

I believe the Archie series experienced similar consistancy glitches when they did their own take on the Eye of Sarnath in "The Future Shark Trilogy".

Course nothing dates the episode more than having the kids at the carnival say 'we're children of the 80's remember?'

It aired first time in 1988. I have the episode taped, with dub into Swedish. It aired in Sweden for first time in 1990, and a stupid Swedish language dub telling "Vi lever på 90-talet" ("We live in the 90's"). Stupidity. You shall not change time. It would be better so say "Vi lever i nutiden" ("We live in the present").

Thought about not leaving any comment on this episode because I didn't like it that much (probably the worst episode I've watched since I began re-watching the complete series)... but I'll just say that this episode highlights well how the series had been dumped down to fit younger viewers...and the lack of quality writing...

To leave on a positive, I'll say that yes, I did have two or three good chuckles watching this and interestingly enough I think getting more insight into April's private life and her work at Channel 6 has been good for the second season so far!

Yes, Shredder and Baxter retreated before the end of the second act. That was a pretty creative way to lure the plant creature but yeah, a little too cartoonish and just shows you don't have to use ninja skills to combat a foe.

It was an average episode. I liked the scenes at the carnival. Krang and Shredder's conversation in Dimension X was funny. Some of the dialogue in the episode was childish, though. I loved the scene, in which the turtles disguised themselves and broke into Shredder's hideout.

I like this episode a lot. Why? Because it is absolutely, completely insane.

Seriously; the characters wander from weird scenario to weird scenario, and it's fun to just go with it. The Turtles participating in a carnival, fighting a giant plant monster, Mikey dressing as a plant...even major idiot moments like Baxter throwing out the Eye or Shredder letting in the "four green pizza delivery boys" just is okay because the episode is so crazy.
